A story of a girl who's got some issues... big issues. Typically when folks check-out of this world by their own hands, they're most likely leaving behind people who actually care about them, whether they believe it or not. And maybe, just maybe if they rode out the storm, things would be alright in the future. Experienced. A melancholy blend of Funk and Metal in a Grunge wrapper. This song made it into the soundtrack of Octopusink Production's new movie, "Stalker". |

"Conformity" is the title track of my new CD that I'm trying to complete and release by late winter. I played the acoustic guitar tracks at the Shining Star Studio (home of my good friends The Mac Brothers) in Chicago when I took a trip out there for my father-in-law's wedding. (Please see the engineering credits for more information.) The rest of the song I recorded as usual, in my basement. About the song - Have you ever felt like you never quite fit in no matter where you go? Always feeling like an outsider trying to instantly assimilate to your surroundings to gain the acceptance from people around you but fail miserably? You're always the minority... feeling as if every eye that falls upon you judges you unfairly before you even open your mouth to speak. That's what this song is about. |

"Running with Enemies" tells the story of a murderer entwined in a blind society of friends and family in a small backwoods-town. He keeps his deed a secret for some time but fails in the end and hides out in a dilapidated horse stable to flee from being hung for his crime. I did some voice-acting in the beginning of the song. Pitch-shift, yippee. The story rides rough along a bluesy and funkdafied, Heavy Blues riff bordering on a Metal edge. |

Ah, another song about my run-away dad. Why have I wrote another song about him? I dunno, maybe I'm working through some issues. Actually, the first song was just my way of venting about him splitting through music and lyrics (see "Thunder on the Mountain"). This song, "A Father's Grave" is more about my realization that even though my father is actually alive somewhere on the opposite coast, I'm probably never going to see him again, really -- so he's basically dead to me and has been for many years. That's just life (or so to speak). Click on the song title above for the interpretation of the chorus lyrics. They have a special meaning for me. This song is pretty much acoustic based. The nooks and crannies of this song's minimalistic structure is filled-in and smoothed-over with surrealistic orchestration. A song from my soul, this is. (UPDATE: This is a remastered version of my original. It turned out so well, I decided to put it on the upcoming "Conformity" CD.) |

NEW NEW NEW!!! Here comes a little guitar skipping along and then blam, it's squashed hard by a Smart Apple signature wall of Gibson yum. Smooth lyrics cut through the heavy-heavy with a sharp Power Pop edge. Okay... um, this is the story of a man obsessed with looking at a fine young honey through his window. His dirty window. Voyeur. Ah, maybe he's not actually looking through an actual window. Maybe it's an analogy of sorts - maybe he's looking at porn on the Internet. You decide. Maybe this song is about you, you dirty window freaks. Thanks for listening. I'm always grateful for your support. |

This song was #2 in the Ska charts for weeks and has stayed steady in the Top-10 (Ska) so far. It was also chosen by MP3.com to be on the multimedia CD-Rom titled "MP3.com's Free Sampler CD, Spring 2001"! (get the CD at http://mp3.com/freecd) -- This song is a story of a man running from the reality or maybe the non-reality of his murderous girlfriend. Mucho diggable Ska/Reggae infusion. Tasty skritchy-skritchy guitars and a phat bass-line team up with an up-tempo beat that’s sure to make you want to get up and groove (if not, please check your pulse - you may be dead). Intoxicating vocal stylings. Check it! |

I'm kind of working through some of my own demons with this song. I was in an incident during my vacation at Myrtle Beach last year in which I almost drowned because the undertow got a hold of me and kept dragging me away from shore, constantly slamming me down on my knees into the sandy floor. (My older son played a big part in my rescue - that's my boy.) I've always had a deep seeded fear of drowning, but not strong enough to keep me out of the ocean to have some fun in the waves - until that day. Every so often if I close my eyes, I can still feel the exhaustion, the helplessness, the gasping for air, the freakin' water throwing my stupid self up and down so that every time I tried to get to the surface to take a breath, it just moved up with me and then sucked me down - freakin' water. I'm not sure if making this song helped me with my fear, but oh well. It's a song from my mind and emotional realm, and I dig that. This song is nice and heavy - lots of guitars making jagged edged Metal laced with a little Funk to smooth it out. |

"Valley of the DogZ" is the title-track of my new CD currently in the works. This song is basically about how us humans, or at least most of us, when we lived the bachelor life or bachelorette life, at one time or another have dated someone who tried to change us, change our lifestyle, even tried to change our friends. The "Valley of the DogZ" represents our "pack" of friends that we ran with, the friends we got into trouble with on those crazy nights clubbing, bar-hopping, wherever, whatever. This song is a HEAVY Rap/Metal implosion with MASSIVE change-ups -- PLAY IT LOUD! (Special thanks to my wife for doing the female "talkie" vocals.) |

Guitar-heavy Blues sound with a definite Alternative Rock edge. Smooth and smokey vocals tell a story about the hand-in-hand relationship of depression and procrastination. This one progresses into some serious groove about mid-way. Check it! |

Faded is any individual who speaks the words of this song in a world of bright colors and shining faces. (What's that mean? I dunno... Just follow along with my Zen like trippy thing.) I tried to compose this song in a way that takes you through a dreamscape of emotions... continually changing as you glide along your sojourn. A wall of acoustics start you on your journey, along the way, you'll meet with new sounds and imagery. Enjoy. |

This is a collaborative effort between my good friends, Chicago Duo, Frank & Bob a.k.a. "The Mac Brothers", "Harpie" of the Karl Fox Band, John Kirincic, and myself (Teddie Tapawan a.k.a. "Smart Apple") - Please see credits for more information. The Mac Brothers have graciously agreed to let me put this awesome tune on my "Valley of the DogZ" CD and also make it available for you to download here at MP3.com. Of course, this song will also be available on The Mac Bro's CD when it is released. I look forward to working with these folks again. So here it is; Blues with a Funk attitude. Enjoy. |

Ahh. Pure imitation inspiration. This song means absolutely nothing, but people feel good after hearing it. Anti-boo-hoo. Folks are eating this song up like it was candy falling out of a freshly busted up papier-mâché donkey and I'm grateful. I think it's because of the groove of this song... just one of those excellent "radio-friendly" grooves that makes you feel like doing fun stuff like running around on the beach. Who knows. |

This was the very first of much airplay that I've gotten on regular radio locally, around the country, and internationally (actually, I think WHFS 99.1 in Annapolis, MD was the actual first station to play Smart Apple but I didn't find out that they played me until after the fact). 98Rock in Baltimore (97.9 FM) played my song, "Which Way?" back on their July 16th, 2000 "Noise in the Basement" radio show, sending it out over the airwaves of the MD/VA/DC Metro area. It took a conscious effort not to wet myself as I heard my song being cranked out of one of my favorite radio stations. The show is hosted by Matt Davis (98Rock deejay) and airs every Sunday night between 10:30pm and 11:00pm. Matt Davis, god bless ya, man for helping out local artists! (Special thanks to my bro-in-law for giving me a better quality taping of the broadcast.) Smart Apple also gets radio airplay on 99.1 FM WHFS (Annapolis, Maryland), (97.9 FM) 98Rock (Baltimore, Maryland), 98.1 & 91.3 FM WFHB (Bloomington, IA), 95.1 FM WZZO (Allentown, PA), Trilogy Rock Radio (Barcelona, Spain), WBTY 530 AM (Waltham, MA), WFCF 88.5 FM (St. Augustine, FL), WXLV 90.3 FM (Shnecksville, PA), KUCI 99.9 FM (Irvine, CA), KRUJ 530 AM (Bel Air, CA), KALX 90.7 (Berkeley, CA), KCLA 99.3 FM (Hollywood/Los Angeles, CA), MUST 103.1 FM/107.3 FM (Etalle, Belgium), KCRH 89.9 FM (Hayward, CA), WVUA New Rock 90.7 FM (Tuscaloosa, AL). |

Um, frustrated love, a little on the psycho side? A dirty filtered techno-bass riding on the hairy-backed hump of a thump... thump... thump... starts it all off. A few seconds pass and a sea of powerful guitars wash over it like a tidalwave. Anguished vocals, semi-slow tight rhythms and a whole lot of punchy bass drive this track to the end. |

This is a song I wrote about my father splitting out on me and my mom when I was a teen - never to return. A heavy-hearted bass-line is soon greeted by a thick wall of angry guitars and an emotional chorus of powerful vocal harmony. Basically, I'm kind of pissed-off in this song. Hope you can tell. |

A funky dissonant bass-line and some loose percussion make this track as thick as the smoke in a roadhouse Blues bar. Tasty guitar licks inject themselves in just the right spots. Brooding vocal stylings tell the story. So grab a bar stool, order a beer and get ready to float away... |

You're not paying attention... then this track starts... then BLAM!!! A bouncing boulder made of two phat Gibson guitars hits you in the face and knocks you out cold. But do you get up? Yes! Because you realize you really dig this song! You forgive the bouncy guitar-boulder (give it a kiss) and get on with your life with Morning Light's vocal hooks stuck in your head forever just like after you exit the "It's a Small Small World" ride at Disney Land. It's in your head... God help you. |

Semi-acoustic version of a song I wrote and recorded in the late 80's when I was just a little punk. Which would explain why some folks say it's got an "old-school" Rock ballad feel to it. I used my 12-string Fender acoustic guitar, my Fender bass and some fairly dry vocals on this one. No drums, but I call it "semi-acoustic" because I used my Gibson electric for the solo. The solo just worked better with the Gibson... It kind of "soars" if you know what I mean. |

Funk-thump beats drive a dirty and sinister bass-line with a surprise change-up near the middle. The voice in the beginning and at the end of the song is completely computer generated (click on the song title above for more info on that). This is my first try at doing an "Electronica" genre song. It's available as a CD Maxi-Single along with the extended-remix version. This was only an experiment and if I hurt, mamed or killed anyone in the process, I am sorry. (UPDATE: Heavy remixing of this song was done on 8/3/2002) |

Project 0110 X-Ten-Dead is an extended-remix of Project 0110 X-Spirit-Mental. This is the result of many requests I received asking for a longer version of the song... so I hope you like it. This is a completely "Unplugged/Acoustic" version of "Conformity". Have you ever felt like you never quite fit in no matter where you go? Always feeling like an outsider trying to instantly assimilate to your surroundings to gain the acceptance from people around you but fail miserably? You're always the minority... feeling as if every eye that falls upon you judges you unfairly before you even open your mouth to speak. That's what this song is about. |

NEW NEW NEW!!! National Indoor Football League (NIFL) Team, the "Austin Knights" (Austin, TX) have asked me to write/compose a fight song for them to play during game intros, etc. NIFL - Think of football in a hockey rink. 18 big dudes knocking the living crap out of each other. High scoring, lots of action and VERY LOUD! They said they needed a song that is HARD and has a strong back beat. Done. This is the possible "official" fight song of the Austin Knights. Contract is in negotiation. Thanks to Terrel LeCesne, the Director of Media Relations for the Austin Knights for the opportunity. Special thanks to my wife, Kathy and my friend Hyunjun Jung for helping out with the sports-vibe vocals, "Hey!" and "Go!". Fun stuff. Enjoy. Go hit somebody! |

This is a completely new and revamped version of a song I wrote and recorded for my wife Kathy 10 years ago (at that time she was my girlfriend). I originally recorded it in 1990 using an old Tascam 4-Track analog recorder. When I originally did it the quality was pretty bad, so was my performance... but the song still meant a lot to her and I. I re-recorded/re-performed it this year (9/2000) using my current equipment and a few more years of recording experience under my belt. I did this new version for my wife's birthday. Happy Birthday, hon! |

I was experimenting with ACID (not the drug), Sonic Foundry's ACID recording software. I've never used ACID before, so it was a learning experience for me. Although I like ACID, I probably won't use it again. I did some weird stuff in this song - a lot of pitch shift down to the ground and a whole lot of nonsense noise... and the vocals I did for this one are probably as harsh as I get (hurts my throat). It's crunchy, very crunchy (stays crispy in milk). It has a semi-slow but thrashy/trashy, headbangy, thick-skinned Metal feel. My wife completely hates this song, but I dig it, I really dig it. By the way, "Kapisanan Magmartsa" means "Society Marching" in Filipino (Tagalog). If you want to attach some sort of "meaning" to this song then let's say it's about all those sad faces on the city streets just walking along... usually pissed-off at the world. |

All of my MP3.COM earnings from September through the end of December 2001 were donated to the New York Police & Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund (www.nypfwc.org). It was originally going to be donated to the Red Cross but they are under some type of investigation regarding their donation processes. This song is dedicated to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and their loved ones as well as the heroic police and fire officials. I wrote this song to help with my own immense feelings of sadness and anger after the disasters. We stand strong -- together. God bless America. |
