Ah, another song about my run-away dad. Why have I wrote another song about him? I dunno, maybe I'm working through some issues. Actually, the first song was just my way of venting about him splitting through music and lyrics (see "Thunder on the Mountain"). This song, "A Father's Grave" is more about my realization that even though my father is actually alive somewhere on the opposite coast, I'm probably never going to see him again, really -- so he's basically dead to me and has been for many years. That's just life (or so to speak). Click on the song title above for the interpretation of the chorus lyrics. They have a special meaning for me. This song is pretty much acoustic based. The nooks and crannies of this song's minimalistic structure is filled-in and smoothed-over with surrealistic orchestration. A song from my soul, this is. (UPDATE: This is a remastered version of my original. It turned out so well, I decided to put it on the upcoming "Conformity" CD.)

    Story Behind the Song
"What the heck does the chorus mean if his dad's still alive?" Good question. "Time for me to wake up... " = time for me to realize, or the state of my realization. "and visit a father's grave, an empty grave..." = an empty grave because he's still alive although he's "dead" to me due to the many years I have not seen nor heard from him. "a man that I knew..." = yah, that's my dad. "an empty man..." = splitting out on a son and a mother makes not a man, but a shell of one (my opinion).

    Lyrics
I still hear clearly the way you talked down to me. You doubted me constantly. I still see clearly the way that you looked at me. My life you misunderstood. Time for me to wake up and visit a father's grave, an empty grave, a man that I knew. Time for me to wake up and visit a father's grave, an empty man I thought that I knew. You don't know how rejection has followed me. You don't but I wish that you could. Leaving a son and a mom was a tragedy. In hindsight I knew that you would. I wish you could hear all the nights that my momma cried. Oh father the pain that you caused. I wish I could count all the nights that my momma cried. The happiness that filled her eyes - lost. Time for me to wake up and visit a father's grave, an empty grave, a man that I knew. Time for me to wake up and visit a father's grave, an empty man I thought that I knew. Now that I'm older, a father, kids of my own; I promised them they'll never know the hurt, insecurity, dysfunctional melody. I promised them I'll never show. Time for me to wake up and visit a father's grave, an empty grave, a man that I knew. Time for me to wake up and visit a father's grave, an empty man I thought that I knew. Time for me to wake up and visit a father's grave, an empty grave, a man that I knew. (I wish you could hear all the nights that my momma cried.) Time for me to wake up and visit a father's grave, an empty man I thought that I knew. (I wish I could count all the nights that my momma cried.) Time for me to wake up and visit my father's grave.
