Much of the last ten years of Joplin's life was consumed with his opera "Treemonisha" for which he wrote both wrods and music. Its failure to interest backers was a bitter disappointment to him since it had meen his most ambitious and important endeavor. He never recovered from this mortal defeat. "Treemonisha" is a folk opera with some ragtime passages but not pure "ragtime opera." It is a distinctive combination of black folk music. |

(1899, Frank X. McFadden) Although published in 1899, this "20th Century Medley of Genuine Rags as Played and Arranged by Frank X. McFadden, the Peerless Ragtime Pianist," is the first documentation of the way ragtime was played during the mid-1890s in Missouri and Kansas. It consists of a number of short themes or "rags," many derived from floating folk strains, tacked together to form a complete piece. Earliest use of the word "rag" was in this context ("Original Rags," "Ragtown Rags," "Rags and Tatters," etc.). |
