Story Behind the Song
Nineteen-year old Robinson composed this, his second rag, while working as a silent movie pianist at the Empire Theater in Montgomery, Alabama. For some reason the exciting rag was never recorded until the 1940’s when a band of elderly New Orleans jazz men included it on an obscure record. The disappointed composer later wrote that they played it from the original score “without feeling or expression” and “utterly lacking in the brilliance and fire that the number allows for when played by a good ragtime pianist.” Robinson had a long and distinguished career as a top jazz pianist, composer and publisher.
