Story Behind the Song
Like other publications by Stark’s Syndicate Music Co. this blues-tinged rag seems to have been intended more as dance music than as a ragtime piano solo. Although the 24-bar second theme does contain a few “blue notes”, it is not in the form of a true blues. Such creative mixes of ragtime and blues elements were common in ragtime of the late ‘Teens. Stark credited his 1914 publication "Checkerboard Rag" to an Elijah Jimerson when his proof-reading abilities were more acute. By 1919 typos of all sorts infiltrated his publications. Future research may reveal whether Elijah was a "Jamerson" or a "Jimerson."
