When in 1915 the 42-years old S.Rachmaninov had turned to the sacred music, he was living through a hard period of his life. He confessed he was getting weaker and older and was looking for "air, rest and solitude". The concluding words of this chant bore a special significance for the composer. He stressed the phrase "By Death Shall Death be Destroyed" by sudden break in the sound dynamics, which turns it into an intimate confession.

Though very rarely- when one considers the amazing variety of his works- Tchaikovsky nevertheless turned to sacred music. His intention was to create such music as would be in harmony with the characteristic features of the Byzantine style in architecture and icon-painting, and with the entire atmosphere of the Orthodox Church rites. |

Eucharistics verse. In the meeting of believers after the prayer of the whole Church and the priest's blessing, the bread and the vine by the action of the Holy Spirit become The Body and The Blood of Lord Jesus Christ. These Holy Divine Sacraments are destined for receiving by the believers, which via forgiving the sins and communion with the Lord and with each other into the single body of Church, reach blessful eternal life |

In Slavonik, Latin,Turkish, Greek and Georgian..........................
We can talk only approximately about the date and authorship of this hymn. Some Greek and Bulgarian musicologists believe that Eastern Orthodox liturgical singing originates from the singing of levites in ancient Israel. Making its way with Christianity and changing in the light of national features |

The Church attributes the Easter Kanon's authorship to Saint John the Damascene, who lived in the VIII-th century and established church "oktoechos" (eight tones)- common base of liturgical singing, consisting of eight tonal-melodic systems (see song diskription for more ditales) |

In the 18th century Russian religious chant was subject to Italian influence. As national awareness increased, however, Russian chants became less influenced by Italian traditions and are at present based on ancient Russian melodies, modes of polyphony and harmonies. Only a few bars of Rachmaninov's music are enough to trace back its pedigree. "I'm Russian composer. That's why it is Russian music", he wrote.

Lost genius is the best description of M.Berethovsky- Mozart's precursor. He was born 11 years before Mozart and died 14 before him. He wrote his first musical composition at 7 or may be even earlier. He was very unhappy in his marriage and not accepted by the court. His opera "Demosfont" was hit #1 in 1773 in Italy but the score was lose like most of his works. He tragically died at 32 in misery |

Artemy Vedel (1767-1806) was peculiar and colorful figure in music of 18th century. He, as anybody of his time, was closely connected to Ukrainian environment. For many years he was regent of monk choir of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and had great influence on the divelopment of Lavra's singing. His music are full with intonations of sacred Chants and Psalms and we may say that he "speaks" by Ukranian musical language |

In pagan times the Kolyadkas and Shchedrivkas (Christmas carols) were a component of sacramentals related with New Year Day. In later time Kolyadkas and Shchedrivkas became a symbol of Christmastime and other biblical dates and events. Obviously, such reassess of function has served as the reason of a semantic and stylistic variety of Ukranian Carols

Pavel Chesnokov (1877-1944) was one of the most prominent figures in Russian choral culture of the first half of the XXth century. His musical education started when he was five, in a church choir. Remarkable gift for music and an excellent voice gave the seven-years old boy an opportunity te enter the Moskow Synodal school, on graduating from which he was awarded a gold medal. In 1913 he entered the Moskow Conservatoire and in 1920 he became its professor. As a composer p.Chesnokov enjjoyed world-wide fame. In all his works the essence of hymns of Orthodox Church is most vividly expressed: it is light and joy wich is the basis the Orthodox divine service |

Bulgarian Chant, Tone Legetos.*** Well-known Greek protopsalt L.Angelopoulos gave invaluable help to the ensemble "Sretenye". Not only he supplemented the repertoire of the choir with a number of very rare ancient canticles, but also what is the most important he shared his knowledge of Byzantine singing characteristic features.
Saint John the Damascene, who lived in the 8th century, established church "oktoechos" (eight tones) — common base of liturgical singing, consisting of eight tonal-melodic systems. This chant is performed in tone Legetos. It is very old, rare and unusual tone.

At the Soviet time it was impossible to sing sacred music from the stage. But the soviet leaders had nothing against Rachmaninov (may be they knew nothing about his sacred music). Therefor the only way to sing his sacred music was to sing it without words as vocalis. We preserve this song without words for our children' mamory about those times. |

The old Russian Orthodox liturgical singing was usually called "Angel-like". It is mainly because of the power of prayer and spiritual purity of the echoi (tones) melodies, crystallised in standing of Holy Rus before the God.

The origin of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra singing is in XI century in monastery, founded by inok Anthony arrived from Aphona. True beauty, inner might, greatness, power- these were the reasons for all Orthodox Christians as well as foreigners. Lavra’s hymns organically synthesize Byzantine tradition and folk-singing culture. Under the influence of south-Slavic tunes Larva’s way of singing gained a power and became one of bright characteristics of Ancient Rus. |

Ukrainian composer N.Diletsky (1630-1690?), the classic of choral polyphony, is recently opened and yet a little known for the wide audience. To him belongs the first written work about problems of the musical theory, aesthetics and composition. In his music were embodied the major attributes of European baroque style with typical clearness, balance between thin polyphonic ways and clear chord structure. This piece concerns to early forms of choral polyphony |

One thousand years ago with the ward of Christianity to Ukraine the culture on these grounds did not begin anew, but its new page was opened. Alongside with the partially kept prior archaic layers and on their basis, the Christianity has formed other original forms of culture, genres and styles. The influence of these processes on national music was especially expressive. |
