	In the 18th century Russian religious chant was subject to Italian influence. As national awareness increased, however, Russian chants became less influenced by Italian traditions and are at present based on ancient Russian melodies, modes of polyphony and harmonies. Only a few bars of Rachmaninov's music are enough to trace back its pedigree. "I'm Russian composer. That's why it is Russian music", he wrote.
