This Hymn of course is best known for the story surrounding it's writing. H.G. Spafford (1828-1888) received word that the ocean vessel in route to England with his wife and 4 daughters on board had a terrible accident at sea, his wife was his sole surviving family member. Mr. Spafford later trying to come to grips with the loss of his children, boarded a vessel himself, and travelled to the very spot. There in a very short time, he penned the words to this now famous hymn. The music in this piano rendition is reminiscent of the full-range of emotions expressed by this song: sadness, deep sentiment, passion, acceptance, triumphant statemnent. |

Probably one of the most requested hymns, How Great Thou Art - is recognized by people of all ages and is considered to be a stalwart to faith. This rendition goes through many moods from simple and artistic to melodic and contemplative to majestic and powerful. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did recording it. |

A favorite hymn for many people, "In The Garden" is one of the most singable hymns ever written. The melody invites one to hum along as it weaves comfortably up and down in a natural vocal range. This piano arrangement features at times a left-handed rich melody line (for those who play the piano). It is rare to find a song that can be played in a pleasing manner using a bass note lead -- but this one suits the style perfectly. |

Of all the hymns I have learned, "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" (written in 1905 by Charles Gabriel) holds a special place for me because it's not your standard traditional hymn, it's more like a ballad. It tells a deep & profound story. I can imagine it being told by a sweet grandmother, you know how profound they can be with their stories. Well, I had that in mind as I played the song for the recording, and tried to play it in a loving story-telling manner. |

I have many "Senior Adult" friends. And often I meet up with them in various performance venues. In the "Hymns" genre of music, this would have to be a favorite when it comes to reqeusts. If I had to dedicate this rendition to any one person, it would have to be to my father-in-law, Frank Padgett, who never misses an opportunity to ask "The Old Rugged Cross" be played. When I first recorded this song over 10 years ago, I remember learning something about music arranging that continues to stay at the forefront of my mind when arranging... pick a clear definable style at the beginning of the piece, don't stray too far during the piece, then come back to it at the end, sort of summarizing the piece and tying it all together |

Nearer Still Nearer by Leila Morris was written in 1898 is one of the most beautiful and spiritual songs ever written. The smooth and peaceful melody and soft harmonies lend themselves to a spiritual state-of-mind. For a little variety, and tonal color, I have used an almost celtic-styled harmonic-theme, especially throughout the first verse, however the real high-light on the piano is the middle section where a singing piano melody is interwoven with a harp-like piano harmony. |

This song has certainly stood the test of time. Written over 200 years ago it can still be heard in churches around the world every Sunday. I think one of the greatest players of inspirational piano is Dino Kartsonakis. I think his influences on my piano style come through somewhat in this piece. Of course, no one plays it like he does. |

I had a rather comical experience with this song. A lady came up to the piano (a senior sweet grandmother type) and said she would be interested to know if I could play the song "When They Ring Those Golden Bells" on the piano at a special event for her. And I said I'd be happy to and if she could give me about 6 months advance notice, I imagine we could schedule it for the exact date of her special event. That's when she told me it was for her funeral, and she had not set the date yet.!!! ....We both laughed out loud.... This song however does seem to appeal to my many senior friends and I enjoy watching them reminisce as they listen. |

My first introduction to this song was in my early teen years. At church on Sunday nights we would have a song-request time and one of the young ladies in the service would regularly request Whispering Hope. This is probably one of my favorite songs of everything I have recorded. It is in a contemplative piano style. |

This song is known and loved by people around the world. I have searched far and wide for the true origin of the song only to find it listed as "Traditional" or "Anonymous", I would love to now more about how this song came to be. Regardless, it is an uplifting - up/tempo song that will certainly lift the spirits when it is heard. |

When I think of great Hymns of the Faith one that comes to mind is "Rock of Ages". (Augusts M. Toplady 1740-1778) If you read the words it is more like a prayer than a song of worship. The best way to describe this piano arrangement would be "Stately and Solemn". The basic chord structure gives opportunity to add some lush harmonies here and there. |

Another much-requested hymn. Probably the most interesting thing about this hymn is that it was written by Fannie Crosby. (1820-1915) She was apparently blind from birth but she certainly had a spiritual vision unrivaled by song writers of her day. This piano rendition goes through a few stages. I like best the middle section where the melody is supported by an arpeggiated accompaniment. |

This is another hymn that we all who grew up in church have learned to know and love. Written in 1923 it has been part of many hymnals for over 75 years. When recording a song arrangement, I play to the end of a verse and just sort of pause and try to hear a transition in my mind to take the song into the next verse. My favorite part of this piano rendition is the modulation to the second verse. It seems to take on "fresh air" as the mood changes and then the new verse begins to develop in a similar but fresh new style. Many have told me this is one of their favorite hymns. |

This hymn has always been special to me because "Ivory Palaces" is my dad's favorite gospel song. When I was a teenager, and really starting to develop some piano skills, I can remember many an evening hearing my dad call across the hall, "John, can you play Ivory Palaces for me..." As far as this arrangement goes, I think the best part is the Chorus where the "rolled interval" technic is used for a special melodic effect. |

This hymn - Redeemed (by Fannie J Crosby 1820-1915) has a beautiful and singable melody - I can remember many worship settings where the congregation filled the room with their voices on this song. The fun part for the pianist is to add something spectacular during the long sustained syllables (redeeeeeeemed) for instance a long arpeggio or a series of big chords. Those effects are in this recording however minimized to maintain the style of the other hymns in this series. |

This songs takes me back 30 years as a teenager playing piano for Sunday Night requests at church. There was a young lady who would always request hymn number 211 which was "He Keeps Me Singing". Ths only problem was that the song leader liked to sing it real fast, and the young accompanist had a hard time keeping up. |

This is a wonderful song for Spiritual Meditation. I suppose the closest person to me growing up who really cared about spiritual things was (is) my mother. And she would often ask me to play (at first, endeavor to play) this song which gave her a certain sense of peace and calmness. Once,I was playing this song in a retail store and an elderly lady came up to me and said, young man, I could hear all the way at the other side of the store, "Those hands are anointed". It let me realize that one's spirit can be felt through the music whether you are playing a sacred or a secular song. |

Anyone who has ever played piano for a Wedding has most certainly heard of Pachelbel's Canon in D. It is one of the most recognizable instrumentals from the Classical Genre. I have played this song at retail or mall appearances before and people come out of the wood-work to say "I love that song". This rendition explores variations of the Canon in D theme and chord structure. |

Traditional - By William Dix (1865) AKA "What Child Is This"... a soft & gentle Christmas Carol but also loved year-round for it's romantic qualities. The melody is very singable and the minor tonality gives it a meditative quality all it's own. |
