Opus 13, no. 2 in C minor"The Dark Romance Suite" | The composer Schubert said "People like best what I have written in my greatest misery, " Well this was mine as I was in my most depressed state ever and I composed it for the Weeping Willow tree which I consider to be the perfection of beauty and melancholy in nature. |

How to Sound Like a Piano VirtuosoBefore you begin your Romantic pianistic flights to true virtuosity through the methods listed below, all playing should be enhanced with two very important elements:* Rubato - a flexible tempo using slight variations of speed to enhance musical expression.* Pedal – use the piano’s sustain pedal (the modern day equivalent is reverb)With these two pianistic delicacies in mind, listen to the following original improvisations that were performed/recorded in an uninterrupted 6-minute performance. Times for each section are included below. They include a very short pause between each section and then the finale (5) combines all techniques in one final self-indulgent performance. 1. Play the melody in octaves then descend rapidly (0:00 - 1:31)2. Play a succession of 4-note chords in both hands (1:32 - 2:28)3. Tremolos with 4-note chords and octaves (2:29- 3:34)4. Tons of arpeggios (3:35- 4:26)5. Put them all together and use the pedal without shame (4:27-6:14) |
