The Romantic nineteenth century was just beginning when Beethoven wrote his Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 81a, subtitled Das Lebewohl (The Farewell). It is a musical tribute to the strong and abiding friendship between Beethoven and his pupil and patron, the Archduke Rudolf of Austria. This, the first movement, is marked "Adagio, Allegro." |

This, the second movement of Beethoven's Sonata in E-flat, presages the depth of personal feeling that became so important in Beethoven's later music, and the hallmark of his Romantic successors. It is marked Andante espressivo and leads directly into the next movement (Das Wiedersehen should follow this). |
