Artist description
Janie Syer is a piano soloist, chamber music performer, conductor, clinician and teacher who lives near Sundre, Alberta. He received much of his musical education in Calgary, as a student of Linhart Walker and John Searchfield. Later, he studied with Ward Davenny and Claude Frank at the Yale University School of Music, where he completed his Doctoral degree in 1986. He was a member of the music faculty at Mt. Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, before returning to Calgary.Since then, Janie has taught at the University of Calgary and the Mount Royal College Conservatory, and has served as organist and choirmaster at several Calgary-area churches. For five years, he was director of the New Works Calgary Ensemble, a group dedicated to performing new and recent music by contemporary composers.In 1992 Jamie Syer and his wife Laurie, also a musician, moved to a farm at Bergen, Alberta, now home for their many teaching and performing activities. In 1995 they inaugurated an annual week-long summer program for young pianist and violinists called Strings & Keys. |
