	The Romantic nineteenth century was just beginning when Beethoven wrote his Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 81a, subtitled Das Lebewohl (The Farewell). It is a musical tribute to the strong and abiding friendship between Beethoven and his pupil and patron, the Archduke Rudolf of Austria. This, the first movement, is marked "Adagio, Allegro."
