A lush and pretty song, acoustic guitar with strings and bass, drums, tinkles!.......Crimeny Jesus & Mary Chain, does Vincent Leeds seem like a nice guy. If his writing is any insight into his personality (and it might not be - if people judged ME by my writing, I'd be lynched by tea time! My, my, my, I can only imagine the pleasure that must course through an artist's thighs when they learn that Dave "Shittypants" Wagner is writing their review... sadly, it's a joy I shall never myself experience), this guy is polite, self-aware, and sensitive in the best possible male way - for the sake of argument, let's just say he's British, despite the fact that he's from California. So that said, he's also one hey of a rock musician - "Little Princess" is as communicative as John Lennon's mid-period solo work (think "Mind Games" or "#9 Dream") and as immaculately crafted as any of Elton John's fab early pop symphonies. I have an immense respect for singer/songwriters that can look past the acoustic origins of their ballads and turn them into fully realized pop-epics that supercede the limited "Cat Stevens/Carly Simon" confessophenia sphere, and thus I have only accolades and hand-jobs for Mr. Leeds and his work. The two guitars are elegant and steady, complimented by bass that cries for the seasoned busy antics of Paul McCartney in his prime and a synthesizer that's as tasteful as it wants to be. In 1973, this would be all over AM radio like Kevin Costner on a banally inspirational story of hope and fictional profits, but in this age of ass and cynicism, it's merely an excellent ode to girls that deserved better. Which reminds me - single women, this Vincent guy is the kind of man you should be hunting down. With the world jammed out to wazoo with loser bar guys and us few cool, charming men damaged beyond belief to the point where casual sex is more sought than love, Vincent is a spark of sincerity in the burning embers of a culture gone to hedonistic hell. - Dr. Dave B Wagner, esq 1/25/01 |

Manic and frantic in the lead guitar parts but sometimes smooth, like Vince's vocals the verse. The constant bang of the bass and rhythm guitar only accentuated the perplexity of the whole. Recording and mixing of I Hate Coke was excellent. All of the instruments could be picked out singularly and had the appropriate tone and body. They were matched to flow within the song and lent extremely well to the listeners enjoyment. The vocals were well done with just the right touch of chorus and reverb. This is a rocker of a song. I really enjoyed the big classic guitar fills. I haven't heard them done in a while and it's nice to hear the tip of the hat to an all to much over looked genre. Vincent Leeds is a very versatile musician. This is a great a classic style, Move over you techno-geeks. Vince will rock your ass off. I recommend this one. |

This is kinda how I feel about things, life, love, death, and how strange it all is, Any comments ? or, life or love. We all have time time enough to lose,...GODS OF MUSIC.COM, review, Clint Gage(4-01)...., "He's great with true folk music but he tends to stretch beyond his abilities (Writer's note: I think this is a noble trait in any artist). Now throw all that out the window! Vincent Leeds is still an acquired taste, but I loved his vocals on this piece. I felt thrown back into the 60's beatnik poetry houses...I could see Kerouac diggin' this tune over in the corner telling him to "go man, go..." Ginsberg in a slouch chair smoking on a pipe in hopes that it would make him look older closing his eyes and just listening to the slide of Vincent's prose...The others were all there in the coffeehouse in my mind...Burroughs even Bukowski showed up for a drink and a smoke. Vincent Leeds writes beautiful prose...and I truly hope that you take the time to acquire the taste...it's worth the aftertaste!" |

REVIEW GOM
ARTIST: VINCENT LEEDS
SONG: RED SHIFTED STAR
GENRE: ROCK / AVANT-GUARD
SIMILAR: DAVID BOWIE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I wish I could only translate the sound into words"
Maybe I don't need to. Of course before starting to type my review and sorting my thoughts out, I listen and listen to “Red Shifted Star” by Vincent Leeds, this creative artist from the magical land of California.
First impression, I am falling in love with this song, and I really can't get this guitar tune to stop echoing in the back of my head!
The song is a precious mixture of tunes and well-hidden treasures that will get you to shut your eyes in order to see further.
Here is my break down:
- The introduction creates a peaceful, ambient high with a shadowy voice saying what seems like profound words that we only hear in dreams.
- A dreamy and catchy mood forms as the song begins to develop into a language popular amongst prophecies and miracles, using well-selected sound-pads and very suitable drum beats.
- A general simplicity sets Red Shifted Star high in the ranks of avant-guard music.
- It gets a bit repetitive around the third minute, but not for too long as the guitars switch the pace, leading to the outro.
- The ending was well written; the song slows down and the sounds fade out peacefully, leaving the listener with ease.
The most important effect that I count on before and after listening to a song is the amount of change and knowledge I’ve developed, and Vincent Leeds delivers a true message in Red Shifted Star - a trip that took me far away from here, from my everyday life.
All you need to do is to expand your mind and experience a beautiful slumber.
