Press Reviews
Gods of music review: He's also one hey of a rock musician - "Little Princess" is as communicative as John Lennon's mid-period solo work (think "Mind Games" or "#9 Dream") and as immaculately crafted as any of Elton John's fab early pop symphonies. I have an immense respect for singer/songwriters that can look past the acoustic origins of their ballads and turn them into fully realized pop-epics that supercede the limited "Cat Stevens/Carly Simon" confessophenia sphere, and thus I have only accolades and hand-jobs for Mr. Leeds and his work. The two guitars are elegant and steady, complimented by bass that cries for the seasoned busy antics of Paul McCartney in his prime and a synthesizer that's as tasteful as it wants to be. ...Dave Wagner 1/25/01.... Folk Rock - ... Band Name Album/Song Name Rank Vincent Leeds, Strange Playground 4 Stars, Maybe it's nostalgia talking but I really like this kind of rock. And the super group. They redefined the term 'rock-n-roll'. Zeppelin, Bad Co... the list goes on. The pre-Van Halen guitar runs were simple but honest. There was none of the hip hop influence that has bled over on much of what's called rock-n-roll today. That was my first thought when I heard Strange Playground. That there was that special something.. that feeling.. here that came out of the that music. It's like meeting an old friend. Vincent Leeds draws a number of music styles on this release.. Bowie, Dylan, Mott the Hoople, Lennon, Moody Blues and Grateful Dead all on one CD. All of them pretty easy to pick out. It makes for a diverse and enjoyable ride."Wouldn't Be The Same" would appeal greatly to any Deadheads out there and, while I was never a Grateful Dead fan, this is a good tune with a country flavor. I found myself trying to fit the lyrics of "All The Young Dudes" into the music of "She Takes A Fall." It's that same falling chord progression but different. It doesn't quite fit. This would be better if the vocals were mixed a little louder but it's still a crankin' tune. "Alright" is a mid-tempo song that starts out with a prevalent acoustic guitar and harmonica. I was expecting Dylan to start singing.Hold on to your tie-dyes and beads. "Coventry Cross" starts out with a crunchy, very distorted guitar run that sets the tone for this track. This track is a gas, man. "Love Me In The Morn" is a slower tune has some pretty strong folk music roots. Have you ever listened to the Moody Blues music that didn't make it on the radio? (I have 'cause I'm a great Moody Blues fan). That's this song.Ziggy Stardust lives! "Big Leagues" reminds me of Bowie music. You know, before he got sophisticated. "I'd Give" opens with some nice piano going into a Lennon-esque love song. "Sad & Grave" needs Grace Slick's voice and it would be a Jefferson Airplane/Starship tune. It has that kinda vibe. "Nancy Whiskey" is a fun combo of rock and Irish pub tune. It's a B-side. But it's a good one. As I said, this CD is diverse but tends to remain true to a feeling. I'd put this CD on at any party. Of course, I'm going to keep listening to it till then. This is a keeper. You can go to the artist's web site at Hoohah Records at or check him out on MP3.com. Reviewed by Chris Lonsberry - 1/23/00 |
