This is the Fourth Movement from the suite called 'Miroirs' by Ravel. It is reminiscent of tempestuous Spanish music, which could be a reflection of Ravel's Basque background. |

This set of eight waltzes was composed for piano in 1911, and orchestrated by the composer (Maurice Ravel) in 1912. This is the orchestral version. On the title page, Ravel inscribed the phrase "The delicious pleasure of a useless occupation", a phrase taken from Henri de Regnier. This is a somewhat ironic comment, coming from one of the greatest and most successful composers of the twentieth century. Ravel's desire for adventure, and to do something 'useful' was further demonstrated when, approaching forty at the outbreak of the first World War he persistently volunteered, until he was finally taken on as a truck driver. |

This is the second movement (Tom Thumb) from 'Ma Mere L'Oye' by Ravel. According to Charles Perrault's description "He thought he would be able to find the path easily by means of the bread he had strewn whereever he had walked. But he was quite surprised when he was unable to find a single crumb, the birds had come and eaten them all." |

'Little Homely', Empress of the Toy Mandarins is the third movement of Ravel's 'Ma Mere L'Oye'. This is based on 'Serpentin Vert' by Mme. d'Aulnoy. 'She undressed and got into the bath. Immediately, the toy mandarins and mandarinesses began to sing and to play instruments. Some had theorbos made from walnut shells; some had viols made from almond shells; for the instruments had to be of a size appropriate to their own.' |
