This set of eight waltzes was composed for piano in 1911, and orchestrated by the composer (Maurice Ravel) in 1912. This is the orchestral version. On the title page, Ravel inscribed the phrase "The delicious pleasure of a useless occupation", a phrase taken from Henri de Regnier. This is a somewhat ironic comment, coming from one of the greatest and most successful composers of the twentieth century. Ravel's desire for adventure, and to do something 'useful' was further demonstrated when, approaching forty at the outbreak of the first World War he persistently volunteered, until he was finally taken on as a truck driver. | MP3.com CD: Jack Sirulnikoff - buy it!
