THE WINNER! Born in 1963 and still alive! Judges Comments: This one is great. I see this as a sequel to Robbay's track. Very direct and immediate antiphonal response from the distorted guitar (in response to the
cantonese announcement). and the funniest thing (i think) is, the guitar responds with a HEAVY VIETNAMESE ACCENT!! i was rolling on the floor dying of laughs. This piece reminds me of the call-and-response in african drumming, rhythmically structured around the "dol" (means "also" in
cantonese). VERY NICE GUITAR PLAYING! and a fluid understanding of the in/famous cantonese "lilts" (intonations). 2. A good mix between jazz and rock, which turns into a sort of Santana tribute. However, the band have made very good use of the voice concept. A very good effort with a lot of creativity. Very catchy and rather soothing. A good song overall. 3. Rhythmic guitar playing that turns the non-sensical sentence in to
a cool saying -- But of course with Chris B. 's vocal -- that always help. The
one has potential for a longer version. 4. this is ok actually To hear more by Never Never Band, please visit: http://artistlaunch.com/artist4.asp?artistid=611 |

Business as Usual's Entry was most unusual. The Cantonese phrase was actually 'sung' vocally on top rather than using a guitar. Judges comments in no specific order 1. I like this ``brave'' recitation of the pharse that probably doesnt
make sense to the majority of the Cantonese-speaking population (Blame me, I
helped make the phrase up) -- and his touch of english accent to the phrase is just
pure ecstasy. Judge 2: I love this one the best, cos it sounds like a song -- although i dont really understand the phrase Judge 3: Very early Megadeath-like. Good rhythm at start but got a little bit too monotonous, very much like early punk or early heavy metal. The band, in my opinion, has tried to put too many guitar melodies in each break between verses. However, they have tried to stick to the concept with the guitar riffs during the apparent verses, which, in true Kurt Cobain style, are incomprehensible. A good effort with lots of thought put in. Judge 4: it took me about 5 more listenings (esp. after listening to the other
entries) to finally realize where and what the speaker was trying to say in
cantonese. i think it is the same phrase ("single-handed, flip side of the
hand, sticking duck tape, etc) a lthough really i can only pick out the
first seven words. ah sort of. it is very funny though. and HIGH SAILS! You can hear more of their music at: mp3.com/BIZNESS_AS_USUAL |

Hailing from Hollywood, California. This man originated the competition phrase. On this track he works with Rusty Russ. Judges comments: 1. this is quite good, a lot of things going on, but this doesnt sound
like a song 2. It has everything -- Noise, Funk, Middle-eastern bell and hell, even
vecoder (is that what you call the equipment that turns yr voice into robot
sound?) -- psychedelia sound that eats into your subconscious. 3. A song with lots of diversity, which, I'm afraid is it's only bonus point. We seem to go from sounds of Africa, Battle of the Bands, through an awful attempt at contemporary music, then back into back hard rock. The techno voice use does not seem to work with the end of the song which sounds like it has sampled the drumming from the Clash's Straight to Hell. Whilst effort has obviously been put into this one, I'm afraid it has strayed too far 4. This one is Coooooool too. Is that a vocoder over the cantonese
speaking? it is the classic 21st century "ET-PHONE-HOME" sound. of course,
after ET phones home, the Nihilists come and clean up the place: loud,
head-banging section follows. (perhaps that was just ET descending upon
earth, again.) then we have an ethnic pipe-like / middle-eastern section,
rounded off by the return of the vocoder. VERY BEAUTIFUL AND DIVERSE SONIC

Solo Independent Blues/Rock Artist. His entry drew a wide variety of response. Read for yourself. Judges Comments: 1. I dont like this one at all, it's like, everything so out of the blue, and a bit abrupt. 2. ``SAY WHAT???'' Nice Touch ! 3. Interesting song. The band has used the concept to good effect with their guitars, when the concept has been used. However in between, the music lacks imagination, with the music very MC5 like. The band has not put enough effort into this. 4. I see it as a thoughtfully constructed "Theme and Variations". The cantonese phrase ("theme") is announced in the opening, stylized in rhythm, and the bass line imitates the phrase closely within the tonal context.
THEN the bass line "goes for a walk" (it runs off to THE WILD SIDE; all strings loose) before it comes back to being its old "cantonese" self. very subtle and integrated. ME DIG!!! You can check out more of Robby's music at - http://www.ampcast.com/music/23047/music.php |

A three-legged midget who participated in this contest. Judges' comments: 1. i like the beginning of this one, then the guitarist got hungry and
had to leave the session to find some won-ton noodles... 2. What can I say? The extended version of Netjams' version? Starts off interesting but then dies towards the end. It builds up to what seems would be an electrifying tune, then commits suicide. 3. Sorry this has been done and my mind is still occupied by Larree's track. 4. sorry i dont remember what it sounds like anymore. A Texan musician. Judges comments: 1. think this is most qualified, although this isnt a song 2. OK, whaz that again? Technically. this is probably the only one
entry that really qualifies for the contest, but it was just too short and not
enough gravy... 3. This must be the comedy effort. The artist has stuck with the basic concept but that's it. 4. no idea what happened to this one. maybe the guitarist was REALLY
hungry, and had to left the session even earlier to find his/her won-ton
noodles!!! but VERY MYSTERIOUS otherwise!
