As you'd probably guess from the title, the refrain is taken from Matthew 22:34-40 (the 'greatest commandment'), with Amos 5:24 tied in. The themes of the verses are taken to an extent from 2 Corinthians, the idea of being able to comfort others because we ourselves have been comforted by God, to be able to love others because God loves us, etc. The bit about us being letters is from 2 Corinthians 3:3.
