The title track of Ross Mullins new CD is an interpretation of a poem by Robin Hyde, the pen name of Iris Wilkinson, a tragic figure in New Zealand literature who committed suicide in 1939 aged 33. Hyde's poetry was largely sidelined during her lifetime by the male dominated literary scene and is only now being fully appreciated for its powerful and original imagery. Tidemarks is sung with great sensitivity by Caitlin Smith whose father edited one of Hyde's prose works.

A.R.D. Fairburn (1904 - 1957) in his day was regarded as New Zealand's leading poet. His reputation waned in the 80s and 90s but is in the process of being re-evaluated. This poem - a cynical adieu to Fairburn's younger lovestruck self - is sung by Ross Mullins as a tango with stylish contributions from Nigel Gavin (mandolin), Tatiana Lanchtchikova (accordion), Peter Scott (bass) and Vincent Pavitt (drums)

James K. Baxter (1926 -1972), regarded by many as New Zealand's greatest poet,
died in suburban Auckland in the home of strangers with whom he had sought help after suffering a massive heart attack. The bizarre circumstances of this death - the charismatic long-haired poet and the ordinariness of suburbia - inspired this song.
Two of Baxter's poems have been set to music by Ross and may be found on his recent Tidemarks CD. |
