James K. Baxter (1926 -1972), regarded by many as New Zealand's greatest poet,
died in suburban Auckland in the home of strangers with whom he had sought help after suffering a massive heart attack. The bizarre circumstances of this death - the charismatic long-haired poet and the ordinariness of suburbia - inspired this song.
Two of Baxter's poems have been set to music by Ross and may be found on his recent Tidemarks CD. |
