A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, John Leslie 'Wes' Montgomery began playing guitar relatively late in life. He was already 19 when he picked up the instrument, inspired by the recordings of Charlie Christian. Despite the late start, his productivity and influence grew quickly.Within six months, Montgomery began performing professionally in a local band playing Christian solos note for note. He went on to record and perform with his brothers, Monk and Buddy, Lionel Hampton, Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Smith and Cannonball Adderley, influencing guitarists of succeeding generations. For the second release in our ongoing tribute series, Bill King and I gathered together some of Canada's most established jazz guitarists to pay tribute to Montgomery. Each of the selected musicians has felt his effect in one way or another. We asked four of the leaders (Leitch, Quinlan, Piltch, and Schwager) to write an original composition and perform a piece associated with Montgomery. The other two guitarists (Bickery and Greenwich) were asked to record standards with Montgomery connection. All the leaders selected their own trio members. |

Winnipeg pianist-composer Earl MacDonald finds himself in the best of company with Kevin Dean (trumpet), Ralph Bowen (flute, tenor and soprano saxophone), Mike Downes (bass) and Ted Warren (drums) joining him on his debut CD, Schroeder's Tantrum. The quintet sounds great through the eight tracks, seven of which were penned by MacDonald and the other being the standard It Might As Well Be Spring.MacDonald has maintained an active career as an educator. He spent much of last year teaching at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio and the year before at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. This year, he's back to the stage holding down the piano chair in Maynard Ferguson's band and touring in support of Schroeder's Tantrum. |

Toronto based musician Phil Dwyer has, to quote journalist Mark Miller "been startling jazz audiences with his unprecedented command of both the saxophone and pianpo" since he first appeared on the scene in his late teenage years. While still in his teens, Phil performed in New York with Steve Grossman, Kenny Baron, Buster Williams and Lenny White. Since 1989 Phil has lived in Toronto, managing an extremely busy and varied freelance career. In addition to working with the cream of the city's jazz community, he co-leads succesful groups with bassist Dave Young and organist/composer Doug Riley. He has appeared with out-of-town headliners Aretha Franklin, Renee Rosnes, Kenny Wheeler, Tom Harrell, the late Red Rodney, Natalie Cole, Boz Scaggs, Colin James and many others. While concentrating mainly on woodwind performance, Phil also plays first-rate piano and has appeared in that capacity with artists such as Holly Cole and Moe Koffman. Phil has toured internationally with Gino Vanelli, David Friesen, Manteca, The Phil Dwyer / Doug Riley Quartet and the Hugh Fraser Quintet. "Dwyer's Tenor is a post-Coltrane tour de force with contemporary flourishes that keep the music as fresh as a spring breeze"Jazz Journal International - London, England"Juene prodige du pacifique Canadien, vraiment us saxophonist dangereux"Montreal Gazette"Freisen has an extraordinary partner in Phil Dwyer"Leonard Feather, L.A. Times"...plays the tenor like it's a part of him...simply superb"Jazz Journal International |
