A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, John Leslie 'Wes' Montgomery began playing guitar relatively late in life. He was already 19 when he picked up the instrument, inspired by the recordings of Charlie Christian. Despite the late start, his productivity and influence grew quickly.Within six months, Montgomery began performing professionally in a local band playing Christian solos note for note. He went on to record and perform with his brothers, Monk and Buddy, Lionel Hampton, Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Smith and Cannonball Adderley, influencing guitarists of succeeding generations. For the second release in our ongoing tribute series, Bill King and I gathered together some of Canada's most established jazz guitarists to pay tribute to Montgomery. Each of the selected musicians has felt his effect in one way or another. We asked four of the leaders (Leitch, Quinlan, Piltch, and Schwager) to write an original composition and perform a piece associated with Montgomery. The other two guitarists (Bickery and Greenwich) were asked to record standards with Montgomery connection. All the leaders selected their own trio members. |
