Toronto based musician Phil Dwyer has, to quote journalist Mark Miller "been startling jazz audiences with his unprecedented command of both the saxophone and pianpo" since he first appeared on the scene in his late teenage years. While still in his teens, Phil performed in New York with Steve Grossman, Kenny Baron, Buster Williams and Lenny White. Since 1989 Phil has lived in Toronto, managing an extremely busy and varied freelance career. In addition to working with the cream of the city's jazz community, he co-leads succesful groups with bassist Dave Young and organist/composer Doug Riley. He has appeared with out-of-town headliners Aretha Franklin, Renee Rosnes, Kenny Wheeler, Tom Harrell, the late Red Rodney, Natalie Cole, Boz Scaggs, Colin James and many others. While concentrating mainly on woodwind performance, Phil also plays first-rate piano and has appeared in that capacity with artists such as Holly Cole and Moe Koffman. Phil has toured internationally with Gino Vanelli, David Friesen, Manteca, The Phil Dwyer / Doug Riley Quartet and the Hugh Fraser Quintet. "Dwyer's Tenor is a post-Coltrane tour de force with contemporary flourishes that keep the music as fresh as a spring breeze"Jazz Journal International - London, England"Juene prodige du pacifique Canadien, vraiment us saxophonist dangereux"Montreal Gazette"Freisen has an extraordinary partner in Phil Dwyer"Leonard Feather, L.A. Times"...plays the tenor like it's a part of him...simply superb"Jazz Journal International |
