Among the more daring virtuoso works in the repertoire, the "Wanderer" Fantasy, published in Vienna in 1823, bested even Beethoven for its unprecedented orchestral use of the piano. Its thematic transformation, whereby each of its movements relies on the same thematic material, together with its four-movements rolled-into-one design, make it the most futuristic composition of its time, paving the way for Liszt (heard also on Virtuoso Favorites!) and later Romantics. MP3 fans can treat themselves to this exhilerating live performance by Steven Smith. |
