The epithet "Appassionata" only began to be applied to this sonata after Beethoven's death, and yet it is a fitting word for the most passionate of his sonatas. Beethoven himself considered it to be one of his greatest works, which depicts the course of a tragedy in instrumental terms. The piece gives fitting expression to Polish national pride. It was a stroke of genius to base the trio on an ostinato bass combining dominant and tonic functions and to build up from tender pianissimo to thundering fortissimo in two consecutive waves. |
