Notes by Paul Badura-Skoda. This is probably Mozart's most famous piano sonata. For more than two centuries listeners have been delighted by the warm intimacy of the first movement, with its finely-crafted variations, by the gracious minuet with its wealth of harmonic and rhythmic surprises, and by the strikingly effective Turkish march. |

Famous final movement from Sonata in A Major, K. 331. Notes by Paul Badura-Skoda. Here, on the keyboard, Mozart imitates the sound of Turkish percussion instruments. It is surely no accident that the work was written a hundred years after the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683. Now that the Turks no longer pose a threat, Mozart could poke fun at them. |

Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (1808). Notes by Paul Badura-Skoda. The epithet "Appassionata" only began to be applied to this sonata after Beethoven's death, and yet it is a fitting word for the most passionate of his sonatas. Beethoven himself considered it to be one of his greatest works, which depicts the course of a tragedy in instrumental terms. The first movement is based on a rhythmic motif that appears in a variety of guises ranging from quiet restraint to the unleashed fury of a thunderstorm. |

Notes by Paul Badura-Skoda. The second movement depicts the longing for peace and salvation, and indeed the solemn theme might be construed as a setting of an imaginary text: "Come, sweet sleep, the friend of Death, and let us be united". However, the tragedy takes its inexorable course... |

Notes by Paul Badura-Skoda. A clap of thunder interrupts the peaceful mood, to be followed by a raging storm that is unique in Beethoven's output. At the end there is an unexpected twist, a reckless dance based on new thematic material. It is as if King Lear were rushing out into the storm-torn night in mad despair. The tragic work concludes with what amounts to a hurricane. |

Polonaise in A-flat Major, Op. 53. Notes by Paul Badura-Skoda. Not many of Chopin's works are as joyful as this triumphant polonaise, whose virtuoso writing is reminiscent of Liszt. The piece gives fitting expression to Polish national pride. It was a stroke of genius to base the trio on an ostinato bass combining dominant and tonic functions and to build up from tender pianissimo to thundering fortissimo in two consecutive waves. |

Chopin, ever cautious of programmatic references to his music, became furious when this fiery piece -- which enjoys a Polish Christmas carol at its center! -- was published under the title "The Infernal Banquet". The third of the composer's four contributions to the genre, the word 'scherzo' means 'joke'. But surely Chopin intended a certain irony in titling these compositions, at once fiery, now intimate, now radiant. |

Op. 90 (D. 899), No. 2 (1827). Notes by Paul Badura-Skoda. Towards the end of his life, after he had composed numerous piano sonatas, Schubert turned to the genre of the short piano piece, and wrote two sets of impromptus. They are among his greatest masterpieces. The passionate virtuosity of the E flat major impromptu contrasts with the touching simplicity of the G flat major impromptu, an endless melody that could well have been entitled "The Song of Spirits Over the Waters". |
