Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (1808). Notes by Paul Badura-Skoda. The epithet "Appassionata" only began to be applied to this sonata after Beethoven's death, and yet it is a fitting word for the most passionate of his sonatas. Beethoven himself considered it to be one of his greatest works, which depicts the course of a tragedy in instrumental terms. The first movement is based on a rhythmic motif that appears in a variety of guises ranging from quiet restraint to the unleashed fury of a thunderstorm. | MP3.com CD: The Rio Concert - buy it!
