    Artist History
Stephen Paul started out singing and writing in 1965. He traded a comfortable home for a park bench in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village in 1966 at fifteen. He has been an artist on Columbia, (Pres. Goddard Lieberson,) Producer John Hammond Sr. [Bessie Smith, Lightnin' Hopkins, Bennie Goodman, Bob Dylan, Springsteen], Atlantic, (Pres. Ahmet Ertegun,) Producer Geoff Haslam [Yes, Bette Midler...], A&M (Pres. Gerry Moss,) Producer Jack Dougherty [Carpenters], Elektra (Pres. Jac Holzman,) Producer Gary Usher [co-writer "In My Room", "409" producer of Beach Boys, Glen Campbell, Byrds, "Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde", "Sweetheart of the Rodeo", "Curt Boetcher"] (Curt himself produced and sang with The Association, [Cherish, Along Comes Mary] Millenium [with Keith Olsen], Beach Boys [Bruce Johnston]...) and today Gary is widely considered the father of 'the California Sound'. Stephen was last on a major with Warner Bros. (Pres. Mo Austin,) Producer Ted Templeman [Van Morrison...] and is now with Beachwood Recordings. It was at Columbia, in 1966-68, where he first learned, with the help of the legendary John Hammond Sr., what record production was. His education continued at Atlantic, learning from Arif Marden, Tom Dowd, and Gene Paul, and building the next step in his understanding of the craft of production. It was also at Atlantic where Stephen gained his first engineering and mastering experience. He moved to Los Angeles in 1971, after his initial apprenticeship at Columbia and Atlantic went as far as he felt it could take him. He arrived in CA in the fall of '71, via a stopover at Dennis Hopper's ranch in NM, and within six months, he was finally learning the secrets of production he had traveled so far to learn. This was at Elektra, with Gary Usher in the driver's seat, and Stephen, the harried but excited artist, pumping away for dear life. Stephen, Gary, and Curt (Boetcher) later recorded together, both at Walley Heider in LA, (Ken Callait, later co-producer of 'Rumours', engineering) and at Stephen's home studio in Laurel Canyon, from '73-'76. Gary and Stephen formed an alliance which lasted well into the '80s. Stephen toured and recorded from the '70s through the '80s with such groups as The Jefferson Starship, (while living in Sausalito... a story there!) Seals and Crofts, Flying Burrito Bros., solo, and with different bands. He has written for Diana Ross, and with David Lindley, sung with Tim Hardin and Tim Buckley, and also has produced and engineered artists as diverse as Al Jarreau, Ike Turner, and Jay Ferguson. While chief engineer of Larrabee, Conway, and Davlen in LA, and Vintage Recorders in Phoenix, he also worked with David Foster, James Newton Howard, Toto, Lamont Dozier, John Stewart, Mick Fleetwood, and Barry White to name a few. In the late 1980s he started recording again after a hiatus building the microphone company which bears his name, and performed mostly in the Los Angeles and Bay Areas. In 1990 he started to form a core band around which rotated musicians such as Henry Newmark, Arno Lucas, Rand Bishop, Jennifer Meller, Scott Page, David Lindley, Peter Frampton, Bruce Gaitsch, Lauren Wood, Valerie Carter, Julie Field, Lisa McKewan, Brent Nelson, Jay Kessler, and others. His fans include The Eagles, Loreena McKennitt, Van Halen, Jackson Browne, and even jazz great, George Duke among many others. Stephen has also appeared on Fox prime time television singing and playing, and his first release on Beachwood Records "Nearer to the Sun" was played throughout the United States as well as being well received in Europe, especially England, Italy, Germany, and France. His upcoming release "The Awakening" is due in stores in August of this year, and represents the culmination of his many years as a professional recordist, songwriter, singer, and performer. "The Awakening" took three years to record. Some of the unreleased songs currently available only on mp3.com, will be released next year on his "Raw Footage" album. Get the DAM CD while you can! This is a limited run especially on MP3.

    Press Reviews
L.S. a fan: Wow. Poignant lyrics, stunning acoustic guitar work, pleasing melodies, elegant harmonies. Absolutely pristine recording, as evidenced by the drums on "The Awakening" and the acoustic guitar on "The Best Things In Life." Shame that the MP3 format can't really do it justice. Looking forward to receiving the CD! G.J. another fan: I would just like to say that it's especially nice in this day and age to find someone who is still making REAL music. The mark of a great talent is the ability to write music that has that timeless quality and never gets old. When the fads and trends pass away as they always do, the music of people like Stephen Paul with still be with us and I, for one, will still be listening. Listen.com: A talented and versatile songwriter, Paul performs everything from acoustic guitar tracks filled with rich drones and open tunings to..." Billboard: "...Incredibly recorded, ...star studded songs and sound..." Rock Review: (England) "...Great California sound, fresh but classic..."
