Press Reviews
Cody dreams of composing, woos holiday crowdby Kristina M. BrettSauk Prairie Eagle Many people won’t believe it but when 16-year-old pianist Justin Cody was younger, he hated to hear his sister play religious music on the piano. Not because he hated the subject matter, but because he hated to hear the piano. The local celebrity, who composed and in-part performed A Winter’s Evening last Sunday night with Five by Design and Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, said he used to run into the room where his sister was playing the piano and yell for her to stop. “I guess it’s like most anything,” Cody said. “I was afraid of the unknown.” Cody now knows the piano. He loves the piano. He began taking piano lessons in second grade after much urging from his sis Andrea. Everyone in his family, “except one” took lessons. “Now, I get very irritated when I cannot play,” he said in a pre-concert interview. “It has captured me and I’m not a very happy person when I cannot play. I have a close connection with the piano.” He was asked to compose a song for Five by Design two summers ago while playing the piano at the local coffee shop, Cup of Joy. He said it was a day just like any other day. He said he was always at the Cup of Joy playing the piano. “I was their resident piano player,” he said. He had been playing at the Cup of Joy all day long when Alton Accola of Five by Design approached Cody. “I said ‘yes’ right away,” Cody said. “There was not much of a doubt or hesitation. I was quite overwhelmed.” |
