    Artist History
    Dr. Michael Stewart holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Composition from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Arts degree in Trumpet Performance from Eastern Illinois University, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Akron (OH). Although he primarily writes for brass ensembles, his compositions also cover a far reaching range of styles and genres. In the fall of 1999, the Chicago Brass Choir released the CD entitled "Pictures in Brass," which features several arrangements by Dr. Stewart. The summer of 1997 saw the recording and release of his first compact disc. Entitled "Chorales & Imitations," it is a collection of chamber brass music. Featured as performers are members of the Chicago Brass Choir. Dr. Stewart has recently completed a piece for string orchestra commissioned by Maine South High School (Adam Davis, director) in Park Ridge, IL. Another commission for bass trombone quartet (Bassic Instincts)is published by Wehr's Music House. In August of 1997, Dr. Stewart was commissioned by the International Horn Society to compose "Rhapsody," for solo horn and brass nonet. It was premiered in March of 1998 by Shoshana Danoff and the Chicago Brass Choir. Twice, Dr. Stewart has had three premieres at the annual International Trumpet Guild Conference, including "Polyphonies V," for trumpet quintet, there this spring at the New York conference. Dr. Stewart maintains an active teaching studio of some four dozen students and performing career in the Chicago area. He currently directs the Chicago Brass Choir and performs with big bands, and as a freelance classical soloist.This fall (2000) he will be an adjunct faculty member of Lewis University (IL).
