Artist description
Guitar Player magazine: "Bryan Clark has a jazz-funk sensibility akin to Hollywood studio cats like Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, and Steve Lukather. An understated composer with echoes of vintage Pat Metheny, Clark exploits space and timbre in his long, modally tinged, melodic passages." A Texas native, Bryan Clark began his professional career as the opening act for guitarist Larry Carlton. A graduate of USC, Bryan Clark has studied with many of the perennial guitarists in the jazz world; Joe Diorio, Larry Koonse, and Steve Masakowski. A regularly commissioned composer, Bryan writes for orchestral, chamber, theater, film, dance and vocal ensembles. Bryan has studied composition with Vince Mendoza, Robert X. Rodriguez, Karl Korte, Donald Grantham, and Russell Pinkston. "What makes the music appealing aside from the melodic qualities, is the subtle musical architecture that makes up the composition. The songs are generated from developed forms common in the classical/20th century idiom, and really bring jazz to a new level - no more 'round robin' solos over the same chords/key, etc. Bridging the gap between improvised music and concert music is what I am most concerned with." This music reflects such contemporaries as Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett, Ralph Towner, and the Kronos Quartet; artists who can venture freely into the "classical" and "jazz" idioms. |
