Carl was born in Coventry in 1968 and began his career in music at the age of seven learning to play the trombone. At the age of eleven he came third in the West Midlands Brass solo competition and played in many brass groups and bands. Form many years Carl was principal trombone in the Coventry Youth Orchestra and the Midland Youth Orchestra and enjoyed a concert tour of Yugoslavia as well as third prize in the Vienna Youth Music Festival. Whilst studying at the Coventry Centre for Performing Arts Carl changed his studies from trombone to Composition which he studied with Robert Ramskill and conducting with Stephen Williams. During his time at the CCPA Carl wrote and conducted several works as well as managing and performing in the Mercia Minstrels an early music group specialising in Medieval and Renaissance instrumental and choral music. On completion of his studies in Coventry Carl went on to study composition at the Royal Northern College of Music with Dr. Anthony Gilbert and Mr. Simon Parkin as well as receiving lessons from Sir Harrison Birtwhistle and Sir Peter Maxwell Davis. Whilst at the RNCM Carl wrote two Symphonies for full orchestra the first of which was recorded and performed by the RNCM Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ole Schmidt as well as several other works. Since leaving the RNCM Carl has been involved in many diverse projects including a multi media classical concert called "Symphusion" in which he conducted several of his own compositions "The Blue Dance" for thirty six strings and "Passacaglia" for string orchestra. At present Carl is the Principal Conductor for the Southport Orchestra, the Beechams Youth Orchestra and Beechams choir. Last year Carl made his recording debut at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall as well as receiving several commissions and world premieres including a commission from the clarinet group Chinook who took his work on a concert tour of Europe. Later on in the year Carl will record and perform with his own group Thee Akoluthic a film score for the computer animator Richard Tucker. |
