Artist description
The Johnny Morris are dedicated to supporting the New Underground Morris Dance community. Initially by setting up this web-site we hope to establish a contact point for those already involved in the underground Morrising, and a showcase of the music and dance talent from our scene. Eventually we hope to start a record label and to hold regular performances to help promote this music to a wider audience and win new fans to the Morris. Until then, you can download some tunes from MP3.com and keep watch for get togethers in your area. If you have some new Morris tunes you'd like to see showcased here, you want to put links to your own site, or you have video of new Morris dances taking place, then please get in touch. |

Artist History
New Underground Morris is an exciting evolutionary development of one of the most famous, and popular of all English traditional dances. Until recently, it seemed that, England, while ironically one of the countries at the cutting edge of innovations in techno and jungle, was surprisingly reluctant to experiment with blends of electronic dance andits indiginous culture. While folk dances from Africa, punjabi bhangra, and the already mongral rhythms of the carribean and latin america, re-invigorated themselves through crossover, the Morris, apparently remained aloof. In fact, beneath the surface, things were very different. The seeds of new Morris were sown in the early nineties when, younger members of the Morrising comunity began using software drum machines and tracking software on home-computers to put together simple, practice rhythms. The earliest examples of NUMD were just that. A handfull of teenagers, practicing in the drafty church-hall, sticking a tape of home-brewed taps into the machine. But add an occasional snatch of tune to mark an important moment, a dramatic orhumourous sample to mark the end of a turnabout and something new begins to emerge. This was a generation informed by techno, drum and bass, speed garage and big-beat. Given a unique rhythm of their own, they could understand how to make something new with it. |
