It might seem many of the new Morris groups feel that in order to be seen to be cool, they need to be seen to be bad. And the scene offers several kinds of roles to play. If 9 Men present Morris as a bunch of lads out on the proverbial piss, crawling from one pub to the next, there is also the imagology of the pagan ritual, the Morris as adjunct to the wild hunt, as in Hern Hill's mythscience, or the Morris as precursor to a human sacrifice. The Wicker Man, a cult horror film from the early 70s, shows an (invented) british folk-tradition including dancing, as having an extremely dark underside, and its no surprise that its become a source of inspiration for the darkside of new Morris. Summerisle Swords are one of the more explicitly Wicker Man influenced projects in this collection. |
