Artist History
cHUCk dA fONk fISHMAn was born in 1971 and was raised in Philadelphia. cHUCk got deep into new wave, but what was really quelching his soul was the dance influences behind the new wave funk hitting in the early 80's. Through artist Thomas Dolby, cHUCk discovered George Clinton who was collaborating with Dolby at the time. Strangely, cHUCk picked up on James Brown from the Residents, an avant gaurde band out of SF who covered J.B.'s entire Live at the Apollo album in the most non-funk manner. Even stranger, cHUCk happened upon Bootsy Collins by his T.V. apperance on TBS's Night Tracks when he was promoting his What's Bootsy Doin' album in 1998. Finally, the strangest part of all this was that cHUCk did not know that George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and James Brown were closely related. But, cHUCk gave up his Duran Duran and Yello records for the funk, and delved headlong into a funk collection buying binge. cHUCk also had been playing piano as a teenager quitely digesting the lessions of grumpy old Mr. Acaro. But in high school and college he also took on lip-syncing to old funk records at public events, which led to a successful karakoe career. cHUCk also made it his goal to attend the concerts of all those funk artists and to get to know them personally if possible. In 1993, the mothersip descended on Denver, Colorado and George Clinton proclaimed cHUCk a "A p-Funk encyclopedia." Certian members of Denver's funkateer realm kept cHUCk upfront near the stage during shows and soon cHUCk was known to P-funk. cHUCk took the chances to appear on stage and showcase his unique dancing. cHUCk had a taken a stab at recording in the past as a teenager, but he had left that behind in 1988. With the help of the residents at 2248 High Street in Denver, or Pepperment, or MH2 as they are known, helped cHUCk realize his renewed recording interest that had been sparked by P-Funk's arrival. "Space Patrol" was the first cut, 1994. In 1995, cHUCk relentlessly pursued P-Funk and on their coattails he record a full-length debut, "The Squishy Declaration." While the CD was recorded with some hipster involvement from Billy Bass Nelson and Gabe Undisco-Kidd Gonzales, as well as Coloradoans Pepperment (now MH2), Sheri Jackson, and Zuba, it was an uneven debut: rhythmically solid with tons of experimentation on the vocal and conceptual sides. cHUCk moved back from the east coast in 97 and settled in Denver. He joined Mile High Squared Studios (MH2) and quickly utilized the Westword magazine classified section as the entry point for a revolving cast of Denver Musicians. The band was called "The Mile High Funkers" and they worked out the material from cHUCk's "Squishy" for the stage. In 1998 some of the auditions for the Mile High Funkers made it towards tape, and cHUCk's second CD was born, "The Interim Album." It's a largely instrumental affair with alot of contribution from MH2 members, as well as L.W. Blindsight and G.C.'s son, Tracey "Tre-Lewd" Lewis. Constant rotations in the Mile High Funkers line-up reminded cHUCk that maybe the formula for the band was not working. In 1999, cHUCk dA fONk fISHMAn with his studio partners at MH2, finshed a compilation titled "MH2 Hits." (to listen goto: http://www.mp3.com/mh2) A little Denver funk war was brewing the spring of 1999, and the members of MH2 decided to capitalize on the wealth of funk material that the combination has on the CD, "MH2 Hits", and write some more new funk material. The live band, fONKSQUISh was born. (To listen, goto http://www.mp3.com/fonksquish) fONKSQUISh recorded only one tune together, and a handful of shows together before disbanding and releasing the DAM CD "12 Inch fONKSQUISh". The core rhythm section is working on a new live project out of MH2, while cHUCk works on his third full-length CD which will have a pop-hip-hop-funk commercial yet dirty and clean feel. You can persue the different funk stylings of cHUCk dA fONk fISHMAn here and this site will continue to chank out new songs from cHUCk. MH2 studios/recordings continues to put out quality music of all genres. cHUCk is funkin' in Denver and plans to be on a dance floor near you soon! |
