Artist History
Michael Salamone writes songs that range in style. "I'm consumed with my creative projects, even the ones that pop right out of me. I don't like to set expectations or limitations on anything. Each project has to have it's own life and dictates its own style. I try not to let ME get in the way." A native of the center for arts and humanities in Chautauqua, New York; Michael has also lived and played throughout the U.S. He arrived and lived in CO for a second time in Denver while fronting Latavon, a band that reformed as the jam-band Swivel Hips Smith when Michael left the project to to pursue other musical interests. Still great friends with that band, Michael turns up in CO a couple times a year. Michael has used his recent projects to test his skills as a composer, musician, and producer. |

cd (re)view: Michael Salamone/Stout & Martinis
Groovy trip-hop with Saturday memories of Superman
by Todd Singleton, Artefakt Magazine: November 2002
When Michael was ten years old, he spent Saturday mornings hovering above a cereal bowl of Super Sugar Crisp that was bigger than his head, full fisting a spoon that barely fit his mouth. The Justice League of America was all he wanted to be. He was Superman for an hour every Saturday, and his fantasy girlfriend was Wonderwoman.
He could fly alright. Cranked up on a sugar induced high, and buzzing from the wild colors of cartoons, Michael's mind spun into the hip little byte-beat of memories that have evolved into his latest album of soft soul vocals, atop groovy trip hop.
Stout & Martinis lays out the cruel plan of life that is never achieved from day one. "...my life is a quarter over. The bills outnumber my dreams, and I never even learned how to fly."
His song, "I'm not Superman" starts a gallery of realizations that nothing is working out the way the TV said it would. No, he ain't gonna fly. The hot chick ain't gonna be Wonderwoman. -And his current lecherous, bitch girlfriend is just going to hide behind the gin, ignoring their entire relationship, if it weren't for the company of another warm body. Life sucks, so let's put it to a funked up and jazzy beat!
Hypnotic drive of nervous tempo, mixed with some old-school jazz riffs brings back all of those old wide-eyed Saturdays. Pour on some 2% indian chants, two scoops of Afro-drums, and you'll soon begin the spiral into the diabetic coma that is Michael's electronic depression. "Merry memories of childhood have all gone by. Little boy blew, but the dog and the spoon didn't dance in the sky."
Stout & Martinis is as sweet as Saturday ever was. Grab the big spoon and bowl.
