Press Reviews
"Like Public Enemy meets the Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Hefty political themes abound, but the DJ has a deft touch with the samples and scratches judiciously. Each time you think the tunes are about to give up the ghost, they keep going, with deeper beats and weightier bass." Sarah B. - Listen.com :::
"A percussion downpour from the birthplace of democracy. A lone DJ, fighting off the necessity for lyrics. 'I'll hum it for you', is a well knit fabric of melodic textures, soothing vocal samples, a driving drumtrack (especially the intro), and approaches a very unique trance-like quality. This tune borderlines several different genres and Spooky Electric has a discipline for threading political ambitions within the feel of his music. These are hard-driving, musical statements that require the listeners full attention. I was pulled into the "spell" from the explosive intro, and what feels to be a space odyssey bridge into the quasi-d-n-b/trance-like structure - and I was finally given birth to at the conclusion of the song. I find this tune to be more enjoyable at higher volumes! However, if you live in an apartment building, you should use your own discretion, as neither the artist nor this reviewer can accept responsibility for any noise ordinance violations."GOM on I'll Hum It 4 U :::
"Spooky Electric has something good going on here with this track, folks. No doubt. The artist classifies the piece within the Trip-Hop genre, but I will venture to say it really pushes the borders well into Ambient -- and even Experimental. I'm always a sucker for tasteful synthesis and laid back break beats. So there are already some automatic brownie points chalked up on the board next to Spooky Electric's name. But Spooky brings much more to the table than this in the track "Stick With Me Brother." The track opens up with a nice, droning melody passed through a filter of some sort -- and suddenly is cut through with the sharp sound of a koto/guitar sounding instrument. The harmony that is implied here is fairly simple and doesn't roam much from the root. What is truly amazing, though, is the fact that the soft droning melody is 99.9% on the leading tone... and it never resolves up! For those of us that understand the workings of theory, we know how crazy this sounds. This is the sort of thing, in music school, that would have made my music theory instructors' heads explode. For those who may not understand the technical side, you will notice that you are feeling very unsettled, almost confused through the whole song. But it is good, as music needs this tension sometimes. As you get deeper into the song, this note almost resonates with your own brainwaves. The rhythmic aspects of this tune are worth noting as well. We see shortly that the rhythm of the koto-like instrument is sort of "bouncy" and almost off-beat by itself. It isn't very clear and gives you no clue as to where the rhythmic development will go. But the drum loop suddenly barges in, giving you something solid to hold onto. We then see how well these two elements compliment and play with each other. The beat created for "Stick With Me Brother" is something you could easily hear in your everyday R&B Pop tune; but it is used much more effectively in this situation, in my opinion. It is always good to hear true uniqueness in more than one aspect of a song. Not only do we hear new sounds here, but harmony and rhythm are dealt with in a manner that is not often heard. Great Job with the song Spooky. Keep up the great work. " GOM on Stick with me, brother. :::
Excerpt from INTEGRATED ARTS III station review on HAL 1612: "...Cotton Candy backbone, an occasional gun shot and scream, Spooky running through the stereo field dropping sound mines that blow past your throbbing ears. Eventual descent from this track is superb. I would have to say, all biased opinions aside, that this is most likely a trilateral tribute of sorts that Spooky electric has managed to accomplish very well..." :::
Excerpt from INTEGRATED ARTS review on I'll Hum It 4 U: "In the wreckage, we see the twisted remains of what was earth's last bastion of hope. A stereo still plugged into the wall of a tattered homestead, annihilated from a 100K bomb. We turn on the stereo, and reel back at the soundscape crackling from the speakers. Those who survived are wiping their tears. Spooky Electric could make a scene like this come into your ears. This is a remix of Insalubrious (I'll Hum It 4 U). Backbeat rhythm driven by a gurdy piano. Good stuff." :::
"Ambushed {Poss'o Session 2} What a ride! Driving, grooving beats in deadly time with wacky horns. Keys lay down the melody to this truly unique piece. This tune is laid back and danceable at the same time. I had a great time cranking this crazy song to 11. This genre of music can be tricky to pull off. So many bands/bedroom artists fail wretchedly when they attempt to sound different. You also have the computer artists, some who truly encompass the word lame! Then you have artists like "A Spooky Electric Kaleidoscope". When I listen to them music pours from my speakers like a raging waterfall. Wall to wall sound fills the air. Creation and life with art all entwined in beautiful harmony. This stuff is truly amazing. The percussion loops grooves hard and heavy like a sledgehammer. The beats pulsate relentlessly. Bass-lines dance around the unremittingly grooves like a voodoo witch doctor in search of healing from this infectious sound. Keys weaving sounds and melodies like spinning yarn. One should always appreciate the craftsmanship of dedicated professionals on display for the human ear. Great music! Thank you for making the distinction in this ever-growing genre."GOM on Ambushed {Poss'o session 2}.:::
"After listening to a few of A Spooky Electric Kaleidoscope's songs, I'm realizing I've run across a very imaginative and talented electronic innovator. Stalking the trails blazed here in Detroit by Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, this Greek electro-deity is weaving some fresh tones and beats into the fabric of the international collective groove. Ever More is a more ambient track than some of his others, but it bounces like a introspective girl in a Maxfield Parrish painting, simple and elegant. Spooky is using a sugary mix of piano, string sections, hi-hats, and atmospheric voices to wield this dream state piece. The song almost reminds me of an Enya in some ways, in a good way. The recording is exceptional, and this could find itself played in any decent electronic radio show, club, coffeehouse... ...if you're looking for a well produced, professional quality in ambient mood music to sip Chai to, you really ought to take the time out for a quality download. "A warm keyboard opens the door to this musical journey. With "ASEK" acting as tour guide you know your ears are in good hands. This ambient piece of work was well constructed and holds its own with some of the best.
Nice phat bass tones cling to the drums and keep the luxuriant keys from washing away.
Drums: The drums have a wonderful presence in this tune. The beat is constant and measured. So many artists tend to over do their loops making the song confusing and hard to listen to. That is not the case with "Wombs out".
There is some fine keyboard work to be heard in this piece. The tones are rich and colorful the mood comes to life with the keys. As in many of their songs Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson reach for true perfection in "Wombs Out".
The recording was done with style and excellence. Enter woven fragments of sound was again grace my speakers, sound like water splashing off my four walls. The rhythm of this tune is strong and it gives way to the seemingly endless possibilities carried by the keyboards.
Another wonderful song by "A Spooky Electric Kaleidoscope"." GOM on "Wombs Out!".
