    Artist description
Back in the late 60's, the term eclectic was in vogue to describe anything that was a mixture of styles. If you want to get even more specific, the phrase, an eclectic brew of, would pop up in reviews here and there. Individual artists and groups falling into this niche might include Fairport Convention, some of Jerry Garcia's solo forays, Gary Burton and so on. As far as my own music, I prefer the term schizo. I'm probably best described as a singer/songwriter and also a seat of the pants arranger. After six months here, It looks like my material is falling into a few basic areas, a bluesy kind of retro-rock style, with roots more in the 50's and 60's, some stuff best described as country with an occasional off beat twist, and some 30's to 50's jazz (BTW, I can't stand the neo-swing sound, which is too much of a caricature for my tastes). I've also been using the upright bass more often, recording it with a mike instead of a transducer. Over the years, I've performed in a variety of genres, including jazz, rock, blues, country, and bluegrass, although I've never performed in a polka band, sad to say. I'm not currently in a real band, and haven't been for many years. Looking back, I'd say being in one is something of a limiting factor, since a band has to have an identity, which tends to lead to stylistic constraints. On the other hand, if I'm not in a band I can put out this mix of rock, doo-wop, blues, all kinds of jazz, and country. At that time I was playing publicly in various situations with musicians who were major, or at least cult figures, in rock, jazz, and bluegrass. As far as the material here, it is all original material written primarily from mid 70s to date, although not necessarily falling into genres from any specific time period. Part of the impetus for going public with all of this material is the lower cost of recording in 2003 compared to the 70s. If you wanted to record a demo then, you had to book studio time somewhere. The early 80s were a little better, with the advent of tools like Syncasets and Porta-studios, although you still had a problem if you wanted to crank up to a live volume level (still applicable today). In any case, the material here is just a start. I have both new material in the works, and a large backload of older stuff to re-record. Press Reviews
Years ago, I was on the cover of the entertainment section of the Woodbridge, NJ "Home News" with the upright. They made me into a lefty for layout purposes.
