Artist History
jASON fOSTER
jASON began his official career at
the tender age of 15. Previously a drummer,
Jason was soon drawn to the guitar, although
some would say the guitar was drawn to him.
With his incredible sense of rhythm and melody,
Jason was immediately creating unique music,
which would become his signature.
“It’s hard to categorize my music sometimes
because some songs just come from two
different planets,” says Jason of his latest solo
project. It’s easy to understand
the diversity and structure of his music when
you look at the musical influences that have
touched him over the course of his career.
Guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Hendrix,
and Randy Rhodes, along with the musical works
of Elton John, Bad Brains, and Jane’s Addiction,
have all provided Jason with guidance and
inspiration to strive for individuality and not
limit one’s self.
Originally a self-taught guitarist,
Jason would soon seek professional teachings
in blues, jazz, rock and even classical guitar.
His diverse background and adaptability has
allowed Jason to log numerous hours as a studio
session musician, as well as, perform with bands
like Evidence, Talon, The Guild, Dixie Rockets,
Perfect Thyroid, Scratch Baxter, The Reptiles,
Johnny Most Project, Chris Max, PeaceBomb,
Taylor Made, Outloud Dreamer, Three, Lunch Meat,
Paxton and currently, his self titled project. Jason has also
performed on stage with the likes of Lenny Kravitz,
and Matt Chamberlin.(Pearl Jam,
Edie Brickell & the new Bohemians,
the Wallflowers)
Playing onstage is where Jason thrives.
He has showcased his talents, along with
his energy and enthusiasm to perform at
Webster Hall, CBGB’s, The China Club and
Irving Plaza in New York City, Northstar Bar
in Philadelphia, Mama Kin’s and the Middle
East Club in Boston, Pleasure Island at
Walt Disney World in Orlando, as well as,
The Chance and the
Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, New York,
opening for the likes of Spin Doctors, Cake,
Bad Brains, B-52’s, Fiona Apple, Fishbone,
Joan Osborne, Tower of Power, Goo Goo Dolls,
Marcy Playground, Third Eye Blind, Live,
Collective Soul, Sheryl Crow, Dishwalla and
Candlebox, to name a few.
Whether it’s for a crowd of a hundred or 300,000,
Jason always comes ready to perform. Jason has
been fortunate enough to be a part of performance
s at Woodstock ’94, Woodstock ’99, A Day In The
Garden ’97 (Bethel, NY), ASCAP ANNIVERSARY Party,
Grassroots Festival ’96,’97,’98 (Trumansburgh,
NY), CMJ Music Marathon ’94 (New York, NY) and
the 1994 KISS Convention.
Jason’s talents and aspirations continue to evolve
as he embarks on a solo career. Jason has added
lead vocals to his resume, where his smooth,
mid-range voice and straight forward lyrics
convey an emotion and feeling that is accented
by the ever present guitar, which remains the
focus without being overpowering.

BAND BUZZ
By Dean Sternberg
Rhythm and News Magazine
Jason foster
“What is right for the song is key,” says
guitarist/vocalist Jason Foster, the nucleus
and writing force. Those who know Foster
(who has played with the likes of Primus-on-crack
outfit Lunchmeat and the funkier, laid back
Three, to name a few) realize that he is a
technically adept and gifted guitarist. Forsaking
noodling for a more rhythmic, textured approach
on Jason’s self-titled CD, Foster lives up to his
statement, never overplaying but still giving the
listener the sense that he was not watching his
fretboard and agonizing over every note.
The CD was recorded recently with now-departed
bassist Joe Cuchelo (Peacebomb) and drummer Nate
Kelly (Shabutie), who also contributed background
vocals. Description is difficult because so many
elements sound familiar, but as a whole, you can’t
quite put your finger on where you’ve heard it
before. There is a mid-90’s alternative feel
combined with modern and hard rock, reminding me
of early Stone Temple Pilots with traces of
Radiohead, Dave Navarro-era Chili Peppers and ...
well, lots of other things.
“It’s hard to categorize my music sometimes
because some songs just come from two different
planets,” says Foster. True enough, but the songs
flow nicely as a package, providing substance and
versatility without any hints of an identity
crisis.
The opening track “Fuzz” is a quirky,
Bad Brains-meets-the Toadies romp that advises
us to “hide your stash.” Then comes “Only One,”
a tune that combines hard rock, a la traces of
latter-day Van Halen rhythm guitar, with
alterna-rock pop sensibilities.
“Goodbye Butterfly” has a ballady Radio Head feel
to it, complimented nicely with harmonized
acoustic melody lines during sections of the
verse. Following that is “Another,” a mid-paced
song with a day-dreamy vibe, like floating
thoughts in an open field somewhere in Kansas.
“Do You?” ends the CD in ballad-fashion.
The real standout in my mind is the fifth and
heaviest track, “Lost My Way,” a head shaker that
features a great main riff, a driving two-chorded
verse and an extremely infectious chorus.
This one will stick in your brain for a while.
The focus throughout is very much on the guitars,
although the capabilities of the rhythm section
are certainly detectable thanks to good playing
and clear production. Foster’s smooth mid- to
high-range vocals, like the lyrics, effectively
convey a sense of emotion without being too serious.
Having recently hooked up with another bassist
and drummer through Sky High Worldwide
Entertainment, Foster is currently in
the preproduction phase for an upcoming release
to be produced by Phil Schmoll and Tony Lewis
and recorded at Longview Studios in Massachusetts
(Creed, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones,
Bad Brains and limp bizkit). The CD is expected
to be complete by the end of summer. For more
