Artist description
This New York female quartet Julia Garrison, LaKisha Johnson, Antonia Bryant and Tiffany Phinazee combines jazz and hip-hop styles to create R&B favorites like "Don't Let Go," and "Tell Me." In the early '90s while its future members were still high school students, the group that would eventually be known as Assorted Phlavors.
The girls began dreaming of a music career. After meeting each other through church and community activities, the ambitions of the individual members fused. It was nearly inevitable that this talented group of vocalists would achieve success.
The group's first band, Essence, paved the way for its success after it won several talent contests and began recording seriously. In 1995, the band was signed on with Hall of Fame Records, and the vocalists began calling themselves Assorted Phlavors. Along with the new name came a more street-influenced, hardcore style. The band began to let go of its gospel roots.
Combining passion with extreme vocal talent and an awareness of the emerging New York rap and hip-hop scene, the group released its self-titled debut in 1997. |
