    Artist description
r l reid was one of the earliest "Internet" composers, appearing on Gregory Taylor's "The Second Usenet Collection" in 1985. Soon after reid began composing at the Columbia Computer Music Center in the old days when they had no money and computer based music could only be done in the laboratory. Surrounded by an eclectic group of composers vaugely known as "Woof", r l reid's work tended to rely more on melody, harmony, and rhythm than did traditional software synthesis at the time, much of which was trying to transcend all that. The works are interesting, sometimes dancable, and pleasant.

    Artist History
r l reid's compositions in the early software synthesis style began about 1985. reid first heard Partch and converted to microtonal plucked strings in the late 1980s. Reaching a zenith in 1991, r l reid presented "We Haven't Got a Hat" at the International Computer Music Conference in Montreal that year, appearing on the same program with Iannis Xenakis. By 1993, r l reid had tired of the non-real time approach to music making and learned to play the piano and the tsimbl. Under another artist name this artist now composes Jewish music and plays Cape Breton music.
