    Artist description
Terry has been playing solo acoustic guitar for more than 20 years and has tried his hand at various styles of folk, blues, classical, ragtime and pop music. Prominent influences on his style have been the instrumental music of Bruce Cockburn and Leo Kottke. His current compositions show a leaning toward folk and blues with an emphasis on finger-style playing. Much of his playing was the result of listening to old folk and blues music featured at Shier's Coffeehouse, a Toronto music venue run by Ken Whiteley. This inspired Terry to start his own coffeehouse, Kelly's Korner, at the University of Toronto. In addition to operating the coffeehouse, Terry also performed regularly there. The next few years were a matter of honing his craft, taking lessons, and jamming with other musicians. One result of this was the formation of a blues band, Sonny King and the Brethren. As a bass player, Terry performed with the band over the course of three years at various venues such as Stratengers on Toronto's Queen Street West, in the mid '90s. In the late '90s Terry decided to return to solo playing. The CD "Watersongs" was the result of two years of composition, and featured the finely honed voice of finger-style playing that he had mastered over the years. In 2000, Terry was one of only 400 solo artists and bands selected from approximately 2,000 applicants to play at the North by Northeast Music Festival in Toronto. Terry performed an energetic and soulful set on June 10 at the Free Times Cafe as part of the festival. Terry followed up the festival with many more appearances at the Free Times Cafe and at Holy Joe's over the next two years. As a sign of the appeal of Terry's music, one of his tunes, "Song for a Rainy Afternoon", placed in the top 40 on the Folk Charts on mp3.com. This was over a 9-day period in January of 2001. The same tune placed 183rd out of 1300 on the Folk/Country Charts of garageband.com as of Feb. 19, 2001. The latter site is one where other artists evaluate each other's music. On the strength of his CD and his appearances at the Free Times Cafe and Holy Joe's, Terry was selected once again from among thousands in a highly competitive field to perform as part of Canadian Music Week at Holy Joe's on March 30, 2001 in Toronto and as part of NXNE 2002 at the Free Times Cafe on June 8, 2002. Terry has been following up his appearance at Canadian Music Week and NXNE with shows at the Free Times Café and Holy Joe's. Also, Terry is currently working on his next CD, selections from which can be found on this web site.
