Artist History
Born in Korea in 1984, Soohyun Nam began her cello lessons at the age of eight; she studied with Jihee Yun, a pupil of Janos Starker, at Korea's renowned Yewon School of the Arts where she received a full scholarship and was appointed the conductor of the choir of the school. She has won several music competitions on both the piano and the cello from a young age, including the Soloist Award of the Korea Sinfonietta, with which she gave her debut performance at age 12 playing the entire Boccherini Bb Concerto. She was invited to the Duk'su Palace Music Festival as guest soloist with the Korea Pops Orchestra the following year. Soohyun has participated in various music festivals including Kirishima Music Festival in Japan and Orford Music Festival in Canada; she has played in masterclasses with Daniel Shafran, Arto Noras, Lawrence Lesser, Timothy Eddy, Daniel Domb, George Neikrug, and Janos Starker.
Since moving to Canada in 1998, Soohyun has won top awards and scholarships at a number of competitions including Peel Music Festival, Kiwanis Music Festival, and Provincial Competition(Ontario Music Festival Association), and has also received scholarships from the the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto/Glenn Gould Professional School and the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. Soohyun was one of the youngest recipients of the International Master Class Award who were invited to the World Cello Congress III in Baltimore, USA. Soohyun has been the principal cellist for the Studio Strings of Mississagua from 1998 to 1999, and for the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and Academy Chamber Orchestra of Young Artists Performance Academy of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto/Glenn Gould Professional School from 2000 to 2002.
Soohyun has appeared as soloist in concerts with orchestras in Toronto as well as its neighbouring cities. In 1999, she was guest soloist for the New Hamilton Symphony Orchestra, and in 2000, performed with the Academy Chamber Orchestra of the Royal Conservatory as the winner of the soloist competition. Soohyun gave her first recital that same year, in association with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. In 2001, she performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as soloist, and also won the Sinfonia Toronto National Concerto Competition, which granted her a cash prize and a concert at Glenn Gould Studio; this performance was broadcast on CBC radio 2.
Soohyun is active as a writer. Despite her young age, her literary works and essays have been published in various newspapers and magazines in Korea. Her beautiful essays about music, nature and God were published in a book entitled "The Treasures I Have Found". In 1994, Soohyun received the Great Reader's Prize from the Prime Minister of Korea and was also named Child of the Year.
Soohyun Nam was a student at the Young Artists Performance Academy of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto/Glenn Gould Professional School from 1999 to 2002, and played a Kennedy cello lent to her by the conservatory. In 2002, Soohyun was accepted as an instant admit to study with Joel Krosnick at the Juilliard School, and with Lawrence Lesser at New England Conservatory of Music on a scholarship. Soohyun is currently a full-scholarship student and the only freshman cellist at NEC. |
