Artist History
The works I have selected speak to my soul. Various teachers, players and conductors have introduced them to me. Some were practiced on a Hammond Electronic Organ, others on the old Robert Morton Theater Organ in my home church in Oklahoma City. Others were practiced on dull and uninspiring organs in "dry" rooms, and others on small tracker instruments.
To make this recording, I chose the Visser-Rowland 4-manual mechanical-action organ at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Olmos Park - San Antonio, Texas. The mid-50's church was designed by the architect Henry Steinbomer using traditional shapes and materials, but creating a contemporary space which draws the eyes upward.
A special feature of the sanctuary is the use of 16 massive stained-glass windows surrounding the worshippers. They depict phrases of the Apostle's Creed in vivid detail and color. The room has a high wooden ceiling and slate floors, with plastered walls and wooden benches, creating wonderful acoustics for singing and making music.
It was in this sanctuary, some 30 years ago, where I was drawn to seek a deeper understanding of my faith, and to find some of the answers to my spiritual longings. At that time, I spent many hours at the console of an earlier pipe organ, built by local businessman - Edward J. Swearingen. In 1981, that 4-manual instrument was sold and the balcony was prepared for the larger 50 stop, 71 rank, encased Visser-Rowland. Whereas the former instrument was installed in numerous chambers and cases around the room, this new instrument speaks directly from its free-standing case in the rear of the sanctuary, high over the heads of the listeners below.
My purpose for making this recording is for you, the listener, to hear some of J. S. Bach's music in a new way - perhaps being moved in unexpected ways. His styles are so varied: sometimes happy, sometimes sad, often brash, other times tender.
My life has been enriched by the study of Bach's music. With each hearing my mind is renewed and filled with deeper understanding.
