How could anyone have known 26 years ago in that rustic hospital in the backwaters of Pudd, West Virginia that a legend had been born? Who could have known that nappy little naif held aloft by its proud mothers as a gift to the sun goddess, Kota, would someday evolve to become Stamen3, (born Wes Chitter), the visionary behind the West Coast fourth wave quintet known as Anarchy Steering Committee? Could any of us have known?
Having always been, from the time he could walk, a world traveler, raconteur, and two-fisted boozer cut from the cloth of Papa Hemingway himself, it was inevitable that one day Stamen3 would become the most influential voice in electronic music and spoken word satire. While attending the Cheyenne School of Art and Design in the late 1980's, Stamen3 met Taragon (born Lerlene Tumpkins) in the campus student center where she was holding a protest against bran.
Taken by her lush voice and shrill presence, Stamen3 invited her to collaborate with him on an opera covering the life of the school's 87 year old janitor, Otis Green. This opera, entitled "My Brother in Clorox and Simple Homespun Wisdom of His Long Oppressed Race, Otis Green and Other Musings in F Sharp for Voice and Moog Synthesizer," was an instant hit on campus, bringing the two nascent visionaries to the attention of Sorloc (born Jon Marc Fey), a self-proclaimed evangelical agnostic priest who was semi-comatose from ingesting "communion, mach 2," a personal creation composed of Maalox, cinnamon oil, spray cheese, and elephant tranqulizer- a combination he felt would bring him closer to a higher state of confusion.
Although Sorloc knew nothing about music and even less about drums, Stamen3 and Taragon could see he already was unconciously affecting great changes in the diametrically opposed worlds of rhythm and percussion. They brought him home and ordered him to learn how to play the drum machine under the tutelage of legendary session drum machinist and Carson, Nevada New Wave influence, Ed Poot.
These three brave soldiers set a course for the dangerous uncharted waters of the aural frontier by playing parking lots, bathrooms, and dorm rooms as "The Children of Martin Gore." Their heady brew of 70's-era Hawkwind handcuffed to early Bread proved to be wildy unpopular with their classmates at the art school who found their work, including their Wyoming middle school radio hit, "Dictators We Love to be "faggy and pretentious."
Unbent by the criticism of their peers, Sorloc, Stamen3, and Taragon headed to the cradle of West Coast electronica, Fresno, California, to perfect their vision. One night, while performing at an opium den, The Children of Martin Gore met fretless guitar player and flamboyant asexual, Brad Huffmeyer, who jammed with them for six hours. Soon after, the quartet went into the studio and recorded their first independant record with a roadie from 70's rock-legends, Nazareth. The resulting album, "Assholy," was only released on 8-track and 78-rpm record, which assured that it would only go on to sell 7 copies.
Discouraged by the slow sales of "Assholy" and by having to find a new name after a rival band named The Children of Martin Gore filed a lawsuit, the band broke up and individually moved to the same apartment in West Hollywood, California.
The band members worked on solo projects for most of the year, most notably Taragon's collboration with future Belly Puddle bass player, Lauren Scheff, on a disco/country hybrid project, called "Pink Stetson." Sorloc and Brad Huffmeyer became lovers and tried unsuccessfuly to have a child, while Stamen3 often locked himself in the bathroom for hours shrieking like a girl in the bathtub.
Tragedy struck the band when Brad Huffmeyer drowned in a pool of lukewarm pistachio Jello pudding. The grief-stricken trio realized they were squandering their vision and quickly recruited former Frank Zappa/David Lee Roth sideman, Steve Vai, as a stop gap replacement.
The newly-christened ANARCHY STEERING COMMITTEE went into the studio that fall and recorded TWEE with Kraut-rock legend, Dieter Shapp. TWEE, a critical smash upon its release, was hailed for its seamless marriage of ambient, barely audible atmospherics, with the tortured, heavy-metal guitar solos of Vai. A favorite in Mexican prisons, TWEE went on to sell 60 copies and emboldened ASC to record a follow-up.
HOOKED ON ELECTRONICS suffered from a breakneck recording schedule (2 hours) and the defection of Steve Vai to Christian-rock band, Petra. ASC replaced Vai with future Paranoid Lovesick axeslinger, Rick McBrien and brought in his ex-lover Bill Stone to twiddle the knobs. HOOKED ON ELECTRONICS, an 80 song cycle based upon Stamen3's poetry inspired by the static on his television, sold a fraction of what TWEE had accomplished, forcing the band to reassess their future.
After a 15 minute hiatus, ASC fired the surly McBrien and posted an ad in the Greensheet to find a replacement. After an exhaustive search, ASC finally found Arius (born Edna Hecht) on Melrose Avenue, turning tricks for Starbucks coupons. Although initially worried that joining ASC would prove to be a career dead end, Aruius decided to come aboard in time for the band to record their third album, WAVE. WAVE, the ASC's flirtation with ska, was an across the board smash, partially due to ASC including a coupon for free sexual services from the band in every disc. The album was extremely successful in Alaska, compelling the band to mount an extended tour of the frozen wasteland.
Weary from promoting WAVE, ASC decided to go on hiatus for a day to decide what direction they should pursue. In a moment of cinematic history, Stamen3 overheard soft-core porn producer, Slick Harriman complain to an associate in a La Brea McDonalds that he couldn't afford to have his latest Super8 movie, Moan, dubbed with an original score. Moan, the heart-warming tale of a 90 year old seamstress' sexual awakening gave ASC the opportunity to promote their vision to a larger audience.
Upon its release, MOAN became the biggest hit of ASC's career, even winning best score at the annual Adult Film Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada. At this point, ASC was inked to Icon Records, a subsidiary of the Popeyes Fried Chicken chain.
Later that year, ASC began recording their finest album, Shriek, under the guidance of former Right Said Fred drum machine tech, Jon Omarian. SHRIEK was a new direction for ASC, incorporating world music elements and a looser live feel to the recordings. Taragon and Sorloc in particular pushed for a more organic feel to the music by using fewer live musicians and more MIDI programming. It was an even greater success than MOAN, but tragedy struck the band when both Taragon and Aurius left ASC to form a lesbian folk duo, called GRANOLA.
ASC replaced the duo with MC Sassy, a token American Negro, and some old chick who's name noody can seem to remember. The newly revamped lineup, after recalling and burning every single copy of their previous recordings, joined MP3.com in the fall of 1998 and set about the easily attainable goal of recording 1000 new songs by the end of the millenium.
Although unpopular at first, ASC scored an across the board smash with THE Y2K PROBLEM, which topped the comedy charts for several months and even made the overall MP3.com top 20. The band quickly followed with an even bigger hit, "I Think My Teletubby is Gay" in February. This version of the ASC lineup was short lived, however," as both MC Sassy and the old chick were fired from the band for competence, and replaced with Indian guitar player Visnhu Patel (born Vishnu Patel) after discovering him in a Beverly Hills whorehouse.
At this point, the band hooked up with Oakland, California rendered hog products scion, iMo, who became their producer and svengali.
Realizing that sexualizing the female body was the quickest path to financial success, Aurius and Taragon were forced back into the band to recomplete the lineup. The rejiggered ASC wrote and recorded a remarkable string of new hits including "I Wanna Be a Stormtrooper," "A New Asshole," "Mongoloid Think Tank," and "Requiuem for a Crack Dealer." Based on these successes, they were signed to World Domination Records, a tax dodge for former Gang of Four founder, Dave Allen. The resulting album, THE AMERICAN SCREAM which was recorded with cheap Mexican street labor, was never released on World Domination, as the label was sold to former Kansas City Royal infielder, Jamie Quirk, who decided ASC's music was too interesting for public consumption.
The band quickly signed with earstation communications newly founded and helmed by the brilliant but evil iMo and released THE AMERICAN SCREAM to narrowspread acclaim.
Not ones to miss an opportunity to suck a promising revenue stream dry, the band recorded a followup, evilpeoplebad in airports and hotel rooms around the world. While not as sluttishly accessible as THE AMERICAN SCREAM, evilpeoplebad sold even more copies, mostly due to flagrant acts of fraud and graft. This album was also notable for the addition of Midwestern housewife, Fran Ganglehoff, on bass.
Before the band could make another album, more tragedy struck as all of the band, save Fran Ganglehoff, were killed in 5 simultaneous yet separate car accidents.
iMo quickly siezed control of the band name and augmented Fran with Stamen3.1 (a perfect clone of Stamen 3), Satish Patel (Vishnu's virginal younger brother), Timmy Leeds (a 7 year old boy), Edna Wigglesworth III (an upper crust doyenne), and Artica (an evangelical wiccan).
This more demographically useful lineup of ASC went on to record and release their third and fourth albums for earstation, SNIFFING THE GLUE THAT HOLDS US TOGETHER and Caucasian Spirituals.
While these albums were epic smash hits of Thriller-proportions, iMo missed the forced, self-concious camaderie of the original band. iMo spend dozens of dollars to have Stamen3, Aurius, Taragon, Vishnu, and Sorloc raised from the dead to join Fran and Timmy Leeds in Anarchy Steering Committee, Mach 17. This incarnation of the band has just released their fifth long player, ASS.
What will the future bring? Only ANARCHY STEERING COMMITTEE knows for they live in the future itself, acting as emmisaries to the present.
