Music Style
More often than not, dissonant and tonal (as opposed to the currently fashionable consonance with avoidance of tonality). |

Musical Influences
All those predictable for a living classical composer plus Haydn--at least, I try to imitate his attitude. |

Artist History
Here is a little bit of biography that might be relevant. Like most composers I
started when I was a kid. Unlike most of them, I quit completely for over ten
years. I do not remember exactly when I wrote my last note, but it could not have
been any later than 1982, and I did not start again until 1993. The interesting thing
about this is that when I started again I was MUCH better. My favorite theory to
account for it is that a decade of being totally unconcerned about what is
fashionable has to have a beneficial effect, and make no mistake, in the system
we have in this country, every serious composer is concerned about what is
fashionable, whether he wants to be or not.
These days, my concern about what is fashionable is taking what I hope is a
healthier form: I am trying to change the fashion. I think classical music is dying,
which it must do if there is no interest in contemporary classical music, and
there is damn little. I am trying to write good music and still meet my audience at
least halfway. Even though my music sounds new overall, my harmonic language
is widely varied, ranging from simple and straightforward late 18th century
harmony to dodecaphonic and contemporary, including some stuff that is
probably unique to me--all quite often in the same piece. |
