Artist description
DNL sings Celtic ballads straight or with his own new words and meanings overlaid. For instance, a familiar Irish traditional melody carries new words contrasting the infamous Indian removals of the early 1800s with DNL's own arrival in the USA. Lloyd's own songs often expand upon Celtic forms while embodying his idea of a vital sung poetry. For instance, an ancient Irish hero shows up in an up-tempo honky-tonk tune called "Cúchulainn in Bakersfield." Between songs, DNL Lloyd emerges as a quirky but engaging raconteur and tale-spinner. With his 'proper' English accent warmed up with California twang, he is very comfortable before any listening audience.

Artist History
From 1977 to 1981, DNL stormed LA New Wave scene with BLaM. He went acoustic after BLaM's demise and released "Dark Ages" in 1984. In 1986, LA's only (at the time) Celtic folk rock band, David Nigel Lloyd and His Mojave Desert Ceilidh Band, performed throughout California. Their one album, "An Age of Fable" received unanymous critical acclaim. They disbanded in 1992. In 1991, DNL performed in and composed music for the feature film, "Shakespeare's Plan 12 from Outer Space." The extremely personal "Death in Los Fumos" was released in 1993. His take on traditional music, "How Like Ghosts Are We" was released in 1998. That same year he began serving the elelmentary schools of Kern County, California, as an artist-in-residence. In 2002 he was nominated for an artistic excellence award by the Arts Council of Kern. |

Instruments
DNL accompanies himself on a steel-stringed guitar tuned D F# B E A D; on a nylon-stringed guitar tuned regularly; and on an 8-stringed octar, a hybrid instrument, tuned much like a mandola. Predominantly a finger-style guitarist, he usually flat-picks the octar, however. He also plays electric guitar, mandolin, fretless bass, bodhran, and pennywhistle. |
