Artist description
Why, then, Marina Del Ray? Because we can do whatever we want to do. The only thing to stop us is us and at the moment we’re not really in the mood for stopping. No, it’s not for money and it’s not really for public esteem, either. A few people getting together in a rehearsal room untouched by natural light and choosing to play around with a few simple chords means little or nothing in the greater scheme of things. And yet the company line may suggest otherwise: we know how good we are and we know what we want to do. The only thing which may mark us out from other brands is that we do it for ourselves: it’s important to be selfish, to please each other and to worry about everyone else much, much later. So what does that make us, then? |

Artist History
Four people get together in early ’99 as Marina Del Ray and venture into the public domain and then slip back into the studio in early summer for a prolonged stay. The line-up changes a little but the Marina Del Ray game plan remains unaltered. Is there really a game plan? I’m afraid so. Independence, integrity and intelligence are at the heart of our musical activity, they shape our performance.Others have trodden this route, of course, but few have managed to be musically stimulating at the same time. Maybe until now. There’s little false modesty to be found here – it’s been driven out by self-confidence, by belief, by realisation. Have you got a problem with that? No, we haven’t and there’s no reason for you to have one either. The days have gone when people spoke about ‘cool’ as if it was the ultimate aim of everyone who played in a band but let’s rename it. How about ‘self respect’? It’s nothing to do with the right clothes, the right pose or the plastic surgery nose – it’s much bigger than that. Marina Del Ray is four people for whom music means very much and yet beyond that remain human, refuse to pretend or drift into showbusiness. Our strengths are our songs, our musical philosophy, our performances but, above all, it’s our honesty and if that were a saleable commodity the whole world would be sampling our wares. |

Press Reviews
The Vaults, Walsall. 4th June 1999--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Marina Del Ray have only been gigging for a couple of months but such is their burgeoning reputation they find themselves feted just about everywhere they play, so it seems. They're as slick as anything, the singer grinning broadly and winking cues to the band - a cluster of fans near the front appear to share the jokes and return the grins. It's not easy to resist the charms of Marina Del Ray and their seductive acoustic grooves. Their "Wild Man" is truly wonderful, their take on The Beatles' "Dear Prudence" is lovely, they appear to improvise on a waltz and it sounds like a song other bands would kill for.The acoustic guitars are eased aside later in the night as the electrics come out to play, and yet the lightness of touch is not in any way compromised.Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" is beautifully played, the street poetry of the lyrics is what Marina Del Ray are all about. And at the close? A medley of songs so tight that you'd struggle to split them with a razor blade. The Beatles' "Hey Bulldog" and "The End" Led Zep's "Whole Lotta Love."Pete GillAll copyrights Acknowledged |
