Reviews: Nebula Drone: A Long Fade Into Virtual Light (2001, SpaceForMusic.com Records ) sfm ND 1029 Live at Kunstwerk, Cologne, Germany on 13th June 2001 Eurock (USA) From Cologne, the former home of the Cosmic Couriers, comes Nebula Drone, a new electronic outfit that could flashes back to the early sound of classic Klaus Schulze, TD and perhaps a smidge of AFFENSTUNDE. Their music is filled with glissandos of undulating synthetic soundscapes, dark gothic drones and spatial effects. The tracks inspire feelings of deep inner peace, and the farthest reaches of space, literally taking the mind on a cerebral voyage to another realm of consciousness. Take the trip! Archie Patterson, www.eurock.com, May 2002 -------------------------------------------------- Krautrocknet (UK) As regulars know, we take great pleasure here at Krautrock Towers singing the praises of Nebula Drone. Well, we couldn't be happier with the new addition to Nebula Drone's canon, A Long Fade Into Virtual Light (Space For Music Records). Recorded live at KunstWerk, Cologne earlier this year, A Long Fadeā€¦ sees Guido Kopp, Peter Schueller and Clive Eggington move away from the Orbiness of Moondown (which can be heard by clicking here) and H@llucinogene to pastures more resembling the Berlin School, accompanied by an experimental vibe. The title track opens an excellent hour of music and space ambience: the sounds of birds chattering are eroded by Clive's almost Fripp like space guitar, a sub-current of electronic bleeps runs underneath. This is in turn replaced by 10 minutes of sublime electronica, reminiscent of early Tangerine Dream, but utilizing digital technology. Lazy Polycrystalline Accordances continues the early Berlin ambience with swimming sequencers providing an atmospheric undercurrent. A cold robotic chant gives The Roswell Documents a chill down your spine, whilst Most Colorful Bubbles of Mud, after it's organic start is sequenced space music at it's best. Blue Opalescent Dialogue has an intro of spacey bells and chimes before an almost funky, joyful sequencer starts underneath Clive's suitably ambient guitar lines. Moving Back To Liquid Dreams suitably rounds of our live epic with a church organ sequence littered with electronic atmospherics, before collapsing into what can only be described as an aural equivalent of an HR Giger landscape, that after 3 or so minutes, finishes way too early. The fact that this is a live album has no detrimental effect on your ears and an hours listening quickly zooms by. Be prepared to put your CD player on repeat play. Krautrock Towers will be singing the praises of Nebula Drone for sometime to come yet! Nigel Pennington, www.krautrocknet.com, 2001 -------------------------------------------------- SMD - Magazine (UK) This is an unusual disc. Part Berlin school, part ambient, part electronic experimental, at times it seems a bit of a jumble, but when it comes together, it really works. Teutonic fans will be itching for something, anything to happen during the 14-minute title track. A meandering, moody piece, it's very well done, but an odd selection to try to grab the listener with. As such, I found this disc really hard to get into at first, but once I spent some time with it, I discovered some hidden gems further in. The typical SMD listener would be much more comfortable skipping to track two, 'Lazy polycrystalline accordances.' Although I've grown to love the subtle nuances of the opening piece, this second track is the real deal. A quiet pulse gradually fades in. Chugging rhythms and male choirs are full of promise, very Schulze-like but not overly derivative at all. Guitar leads are laid just right over the top, powerful but not too heavy. Three-quarters into the track, the bubbly sequence is classic, and we begin to relax and think we're right at home. Dark sinister atmospherics take over for the last couple of minutes. Very cool. 'The Roswell Documents' has a long vocoder section that has me straining to hear what they are saying, but I don't get it. Much better is 'Most colorful bubbles of mud' (!), which begins with thudding sounds that pan back and forth, sort of a cross between a slamming door and something else, I'm not sure what. Light ethereal synth textures then drift in, very bright. A few minutes in you'd decide this is another ambient piece, but then total vintage Schulze sounds emerge again at the 6:00 mark and continue energetically for several minutes. This is a great track featuring wonderful twists and turns, it's hard to know what to expect next. After a couple minutes of abstract sounds, 'Blue and opalescent dialogue' finds itself in the same Schulze-like groove, again proving irresistible. 'Moving back to liquid dreams' mellows things out to finish, full of light and bright shimmers. Give this disc a lot of attention and the rewards will definitely appear, but some of you may lose patience before getting there.
