Press Reviews
The other day I received an EP entitled Megotholis, in the mail from Chicagobased band, Grigori 3. I went through my usual routine and put it in my carstereo at some fairly high decibels in which to examine the songs with. The 1sttrack started started out with some melodic feminine humming so I turned mystereo up a bit louder expecting the album to be an ethereal/ambient offering. It's a good thing I was at a stoplight when the wall of sound hit me like a twoton heavy thing.Electronic background noises and effects swirled violently around my car, heldin place by a very solid beat all of which was just barely overshadowed byguitar chords that Rammstein or Metallica would have been proud of. At thispoint I was expecting the usual trash can, eat-the-mic vocals to start grindinginto my head but was pleasantly surprised when vocalist, Gwendy Bartolini, chimed in with clean and understandable yet edgy, melodies. By the time the first chorus hit I was already hooked, Guitarist Ray Wise, Bassist Mike Kmak,Keyboardist Brian Bradbury and Drummer, Mike Lindsay had enveloped me in acacophony of modern edged metal and held my attention while Gwendy sang to me.The music progressed into a chorus of angels singing over an ominous andunforgiving soundscape, much like heaven and hell. The dichotomy of the singerwith THAT band makes you want to listen to see what impossible thing they willdo next. While all of the tracks held my interest, Megotholis and Awakeningwere just plain impressive. When I imagine this group in a state of the art studio with a producer like David Ogivie it makes me cringe at the possibilities. Take a listen foryourself at Gothic Radio or at their MP-3 site, http://www.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/GRIGORI_3/ and thank me later.-Program Director Gothic Radio http://www.gothicradio.com |
