Artist History
Patrick Murphy is a Montreal-born musician who began his musical career on the Clarinet and Saxophone in 1973. He has performed several times at the Montreal International Jazz festival during the early 1980's with a variety of Jazz ensembles. During that period, he could be heard at some of the local clubs, performing mostly traditional Jazz as well as the old standards. After graduating from University, his involvement in music began to diminish as the demands of his career began to take hold. During the early 1990's, he moved to the United States to pursue his career in Audiology and abandoned all of his music interests. During the winter of 1999, an insatiable urge to play the Clarinet resurfaced one morning without warning.
This renewed passion for music has allowed him to enjoy music as a hobby rather than a career. Patrick now lives in Salt Lake City and can be heard performing on mp3.com and at the occasional gig here and there. More recently, he could be seen performing at the 2002, SLC Winter Olympics with a local band called the "Big City Scandal". His primary musical goal is to have lots of fun without the pressures associated with being a professional musician. His musical emphasis has always been on the importance of expression rather than "blowing-away" his audience with technical prowess. Although he agrees that technical ability is an important tool, it is not a substitute for musicality.
His musical inspiration is varied and includes such Jazz greats as Paul Desmond, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Goodman, and Sidney Bechet. In fact, his playing style can be directly traced to these instrumentalists. His favorite musical instrument is still the Clarinet, despite the fact that he has spent most of his life playing the alto Sax. This choice arose early in his career with the realization that the Clarinet no longer enjoyed a predominant role in Jazz. More importantly, he discovered that girls weren't terribly impressed with a guy playing a wimpy Clarinet. Despite this hormone-driven switch in musical instrument, he now realizes that the Clarinet may rule after-all.
One thing for sure, Pat Murphy is back, and you can expect to hear him perform many more oldies but moldies. Stay Tuned!
